One note about portabledrives don't carry your backups around. If you're physically moving an off-site backup somewhere else, move it and be done. Don't expose your backup to all the weather, car crashes, theft, and other risks portable drives introduce.

90 organisations reporting data breaches from Capita hack – DIGIT.FYI

Capita, a business process outsourcer that handles the data of millions of people, was targeted in a cyber-attack at the end of March. The attack revealed that Capita had been leaving much of its data in unsecured cloud servers online.

Now, the number of companies reporting data breaches to the ICO in connection to Capita is around 90. Capita says it has taken the appropriate steps to secure the data.

The ICO is now warning that thousands of people could have been affected by the hack. We are receiving a large number of reports from organisations directly affected by these incidents and we are currently making enquiries, said the ICO in a release.

We are encouraging organisations that use Capitas services to check their own position regarding these incidents and determine if the personal data they hold has been affected, it continued.

The ICO is urging organisations to notify them within 72 hours of becoming aware of a personal data breach, unless it does not pose a risk to peoples rights and freedoms. However, if an organisation decides the breach does not need reporting, organisations should keep a record of it to be able to explain why it wasnt reported if necessary.

The attack and unsecured data

Capita first came into the limelight when it was the victim of a cyber-attack on 31 March. A Capita employee revealed to the Guardian that they were unable to log into their laptops.

Later, Capita released a statement that there was a cyber-incident which impacted its internal Microsoft Office 365 applications. The company claimed at the time that there was no evidence of customer, supplier, or colleague data having been compromised.

Earlier this month Capita came under scrutiny once again when it was revealed that it had left a repository of files unsecured online. The unsecured data included that of local authorities such as Colchester council.

We are extremely disappointed that such a serious data breach by one of our contractors has occurred, said Richard Block, Colchester City Councils Chief Operating Officer.

Capita is one of the largest suppliers for the UK public sector, and provides supplies for many military institutions as well as the NHS, and is contracted for HM Revenue and Customs.

How to achieve deep observability in a hybrid cloud world and … – iTWire

Changed economic conditions means IT leaders are under pressure to do more with less, and the dream of moving all workloads into the public cloud have not been realised, says Gigamon CEO Shane Buckley. For cost, performance and scalability reasons hybrid cloud is the reality in 2023.

But IT organisations still need to meet governance, risk and compliance (GRC) requirements, so the observability market is changing.

"Cloud is simple when it is; if it isn't, then it's really complicated" and hybrid cloud is complicated, he says.

Cloud-first observability vendors need to find ways of looking inside hybrid environments (eg, containers) in order to capitalise on what they already have.

Conversely, traditional approaches to observability combine log and network data analysis, but that network data is not available in public clouds. Furthermore, attackers are known to penetrate systems and then lay dormant for several months to "fool the enterprise into thinking everything's fine" before turning off logging and exfiltrating data.

The company has some 15 years experience in on-premises and private cloud observability, and has brought that to public cloud and containers.

Gigamon's approach is able to obtain data from inside every cloud platform, capturing and aggregating traffic, and then transforming and enriching it to deliver actionable intelligence that can be connected to an organisation's observability and security stack, including detection and response systems, extended detection and response systems, and data lakes.

That way, he explains, customers can keep all their existing tools, and when a workload is moved (eg, from an in-premises container to a container in the public cloud), Gigamon moves the telemetry with it.

Furthermore, organisations need consistent telemetry across hybrid clouds, whether they are doing 'lift and shift' migrations or modernising their applications to run in the cloud.

Things can become particularly complicated where microservices are involved. Applications might work well when all the parts are in the same place, but performance can suffer greatly if they become split between the data centre and the cloud. Without deep observability, it can be hard to determine what has gone wrong, because application performance monitoring tools do not work in the cloud. Buckley is aware of an application where the response time soared from around three seconds to three minutes in these circumstances.

With Gigamon, IT organisations are able to see what is happening, and reallocate applications appropriately to improve performance.

It typically takes two to three years to modernise an application, and some have to be completely rewritten. This is rarely feasible, especially when IT is under pressure to do more with less and the benefit of such projects are unclear. So the likely choice is to keep using the old application, but in a container located on-premises or in the cloud.

Fewer workloads than originally expected have been moved to the cloud, Buckley says, and 'Cloud 2.0' reflects a realisation that some applications do not run well in the cloud (especially those that involve sending data back to the data centre), therefore they should not be moved into the cloud. From Gigamon's perspective, "it's whatever's best for the customer."

Gigamon ANZ country manager Jonathan Hatchuel points out that one large bank's "everything in the cloud" policy is now read as if it were "everything in the hybrid cloud," reflecting Cloud 2.0 thinking.

Whether an application is being kept on-premises or moved to the cloud, Gigamon can help. Organisations can choose Tanzu, Kubernetes, OpenShift, etc whichever works best for them and Gigamon can provide the telemetry needed to ensure applications are working right, says Buckley.

Public cloud "is important, but not a panacea," so some 90 percent of organisations are adopting hybrid cloud. That is often a hybrid multi-cloud strategy, especially when SaaS applications such as Salesforce and Workday are part of the picture.

That hybrid strategy, especially for larger organisations, includes a program of consolidating and renovating data centres in the right locations (power and cooling capacity are among the criteria), using modern virtualisation and container technology.

A particular use of public cloud that makes financial and operational sense is to provide burst capacity to deal with peak loads. This is another situation where Gigamon's technology can be used to provide the telemetry to feed the organisation's management and security tools.

Zero trust architectures are becoming a required element of hybrid cloud security, he says, in part due to US Executive Order 14028 which requires, among other things, all agencies to develop a plan to implement zero trust. This idea is spreading to other nations, including Australia.

Hatchuel pointed out that all of Gigamon's Australian customers are seeing pressure as Federal Government regulations change. Australia is regarded as a pioneer in critical infrastructure security (as shown by the appointment of a Minister for Cyber Security and the promulgation of the Essential Eight), but there have been several large, high-profile security breaches.

"Government has set some policy for the regulatory environment around critical infrastructure," he notes, and organisations need to comply. But as one local Gigamon customer observed, "you can't regulate what you can't see," so visibility is a key to security.

Gigamon is already part of most government infrastructure, says Buckley, as well as that of most service providers, and most enterprises that aren't already customers are looking at it. "Gigamon has the Who' Who of Australian business" and government.

While security models vary, they all say you cannot have blind spots in a network, especially for east-west traffic between servers in a data centre. Nothing should be implicitly trusted: zero trust means everything has to prove it can be trusted. Making sure that happens requires continuous visibility, and Gigamon's approach includes monitoring east-west traffic by not only extracting metadata from the headers, but also by acting as a man in the middle that can break and inspect encrypted data on behalf of security tools.

Arthur Hayes’ Fund Wants to Avoid Regulatory Conflicts With … – Blockworks

Maelstrom is the debut fund from BitMEX founder Arthur Hayes family office. Just five months old.

BitMEXs former CEO is serving as Maelstrom chief investment officer, with Akshat Vaidya previously BitMEXs vice president of corporate development and strategic finance operating as the funds investment head.

Hayes, whos still on probation as a result of Bank Secrecy Act charges, has indeed been active in crypto since his case was finalized.

But Maelstrom must find its footing as crypto experiences tightening across its venture capital landscape, alongside diminished late-stage funding.

There are signs of revitalization. Still, startups should avoid securing funds at excessively high valuations in order to mitigate the impact of any subsequent bear market.

Blockworks caught up with Vaidya to learn more about how Maelstrom navigates that necessary realism, while maintaining focus on tangible returns.

Blockworks: Can you provide an example of a startup youve invested in that you believe is doing an excellent job in building decentralized infrastructure?

Vaidya: Our debut investment in January was in Obol Labs, a distributed validator technology middleware company that allows Ethereum validator keys to be split among multiple node operators, effectively reducing single points of failure for Ethereum staking.

We like startups like these for a few reasons:

Blockworks: Given your focus on decentralization, how does Maelstrom see the current regulatory landscape affecting the future of decentralized systems and blockchain technology?

Vaidya: We like to invest where there is no conflict between regulatory concerns and decentralization. There have honestly been cases in the past where regulators rightfully called out counterparty and ecosystem risks of custodial business models in our industry that would have been mitigated or eliminated entirely by greater decentralization. This is where we like to play.

Blockworks: What strategies does Maelstrom employ to ensure that investments are both technologically innovative and financially viable in the long run?

Vaidya: Our financial, operational, legal and tech diligence is rooted in our DNA as founders, builders and operators ourselves. [Hayes] built one of the first profitable unicorns in this industry, and hence Maelstrom has a knack for selecting winning teams and products.

Blockworks: How does Maelstrom support founders after initial investment?

Vaidya: [Hayes] is one of the few investors out there in any industry who has ever built a profitable unicorn from the ground up himself. Many investors out there are excellent at backing winners; but [Hayes] is also excellent at building them. Founders tend to view his experience, relationships and advice as hard to come by.

And given our check size ($100,000 $250,000), we rarely crowd out others on the cap table. Hence, other like-minded investors tend to invite us to deals as well, as they see us as complementary, not overly dilutive or redundant.

Blockworks: How do you anticipate the future of decentralized products, services, and markets to evolve in the next five to 10 years? How does Maelstrom position itself for these changes?

Vaidya: Within our lifetimes, a nontrivial amount of global GDP will be directly or indirectly cleared on blockchains (public, state-permissioned, and private). We expect this change to come about the same way it did for Zoom prior to Covid, Zoom spent nearly a decade building infrastructure for a world that didnt exist yet. Legacy in-person workplace infrastructure worked just fine until suddenly it wasnt an option.

Thats when new, alternative workplace infrastructure (like Zoom) turned out to be visionary, proving indispensable for the world it predicted would eventually come. Nowadays, if you dont use Zoom, Hangouts or Teams you basically dont exist. That seismic behavioral change came about in a span of just six to 18 months.

Blockchain too will have its Zoom/Covid cambrian explosion moment some day, when legacy financial infrastructure starts to fail us (for any number of geopolitical, economic or technological reasons). When that happens, our portfolio will be positioned to capture meaningful value.

Blockworks: Given Arthur Hayes background, does Maelstrom focus specifically on blockchain-based financial products?

Vaidya: Maelstrom is open to any business model that monetizes the internet in a new way previously impossible.

Blockworks: Could you elaborate on Maelstroms long-term mandate? How does this affect your investment decisions compared to other funds that might prioritize quicker returns?

Vaidya: Our family office structure allows us to invest with a longer horizon in mind than typical venture funds, which are boxed into deals with three- to five-year exits. Of course well do those deals too; but were also building a long-term portfolio of decentralized infrastructure companies/protocols that will serve as building blocks of the future.
