Of all the things there may be to fear and loathe about Googles new generative artificial intelligence tool, the most offensive is its name: Bard.

In scholarly circles, there is only one Bard, and that is The Bardnamely, The Bard of Avon, better known as William Shakespeare, whose writings are everything that AI is not: wise, witty, compassionate, and above all, deeply human.

There may always be disputes over who actually wrote the approximately 39 plays that comprise the so-called Shakespeare canon. But theres one thing we know for certain: It was not a chatbot.

To name a generative AI tool after one of the worlds greatest humanists is ironic at best, and at worst belittles the true Bard, whose name the tech industry has now reduced to a marketing commodity, a gimmick to sell software.

The deeper problem, though, isnt just the cheapening of Shakespeares moniker. Its the devaluing of the humanitiesof history, literature and art, and of inquiry, creativity and critical thinkingin every sphere.

In K-12 classrooms, history, civics, literature and the arts have been pushed to the margins as educators struggle to meet standards-driven testing mandates. Culture wars over what books students should read dont help.

It's not that Science, Technology, Engineering and Math arent essential. STEM investments are crucial to American economic competitiveness and national security. And AI itself holds great promise for medical breakthroughs, disaster relief, industrial automation, and a host of other areas, including education. Some even argue that generative AI can be a boon to democracy, inviting new voices into public debates, and helping digest citizen opinions.

But if theres anything the advent of AI has taught us, its that STEM is not enough. To unleash generative AI on the world with no thoughtful constraints or oversight would be to invite disaster on a scale we humans can hardly imagine. Thats why more than 1,000 technology experts have called for a six-month moratorium on the development of new AI systems, citing profound risks to society and humanity.

One need not fear that machines will end up controlling humans to appreciate that AI will be highly disruptiveto jobs, to social interactions, to virtually every global industry and institution. Those most at risk may well be the worlds creativesthe artists whose works new software tools may exploit without credit, the writers now striking in part because they fear AI will put them out of work.

Yet humanists are the ones best equipped to get us out of the AI mess. How can we ensure that AI does not invade privacy, facilitate fraud and extortion, intensify discrimination, fuel monopolies, and flood the internet with false texts and images that are impossible to verify? Answering these questions will take discernment, empathy, critical thought, imagination, an appreciation for nuance, a grasp of ethics and historyin other words, all the skills at the heart of a liberal education.

The full promise of AI will never be realized if we abandon the humanitiesand our humanityalong the way. Even Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, one of the tech industrys greatest innovators, famously celebrated the intersection of technology and liberal arts. There will be no easy answers to the regulatory, ethical and legal questions that the coming AI explosion will pose. But the key may be, as Jaswinder Bolinda recently wrote, to think like a poet.

A poet himself, Bolinda recently took heart from the underwhelming, jejeune and hackneyed stanzas that ChatGPT3 produced when he asked the AI software to generate some verses in his own style. True poetry, Bolinda recently wrote in The Washington Post, must be earnest, singular and unpredictable. In a word, it must be human.

The worlds workers, Bolinda argues, can make themselves irreplaceable by taking classes in creative writing, music, theater, painting and dance; by studying and making literature and art, those allegedly pointless pursuits that our culture and our universities have increasingly neglected. Its the lessons learned in creative enterprise, as he sees it, that will enable us to invent new and more humane ways of using technology to answer human concerns and solve human crises.

Its a point that The Bardthe true Bardwould have appreciated well. Shakespeare had much to say about the human conditionabout love, envy, wisdom, folly, wealth, power, time, luck, evil and death. Of generative AI, he might have said, as Troilus does on reading (and then tearing up) a letter from Cressida: Words, words, mere words, no matter from the heart . Or perhaps he might have called, as so many tech leaders have, for a judicious pause. After all, as Lady Macbeth bemoans amid her descent into madness: Whats done cannot be undone.

Marvel Used AI to Create Secret Invasion Opening Credits, EP Says It Fits the Shape-Shifting Plot – Variety

Marvels Secret Invasion is causing a stir on social media after one of the series executive producers, Ali Selim, confirmed to Polygon that artificial intelligence was used to create the series opening credits sequence. Selim explained the decision to use AI felt right given the plot of Secret Invasion, which follows Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) as he uncovers shape-shifting Skrulls who have gained positions of power across the Earth by appearing as human world leaders. The opening credits, designed by Method Studios, is a montage of moving paintings that depict the Skrulls invasion of Earth.

When we reached out to the AI vendors, that was part of it it just came right out of the shape-shifting, Skrull world identity, you know? Who did this? Who is this? Selim said, while also admitting he doesnt really understand how AI works.

We would talk to them about ideas and themes and words, and then the computer would go off and do something, he added. And then we could change it a little bit by using words, and it would change.

The decision to have AI play a role in the creation of the Secret Invasion opening credits has upset many viewers on social media, as using AI presumably took jobs away from human animators and graphic designers. Marvel Studios parent company, Disney, has increasingly been using AI on projects, most notably in the de-aging of Harrison Ford in the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

As Ford revealed earlier this year, Lucasfilm used AI technology to comb through all of the decades-old footage the studio has of the actor. Ford has long been one of Lucasfilms biggest stars thanks to roles in several Star Wars and Indiana Jones. The artificial intelligence program even had access to rolls of film featuring Ford that never made it to theaters.

They have this artificial intelligence program that can go through every foot of film that Lucasfilm owns, Ford said. Because I did a bunch of movies for them, they have all this footage, including film that wasnt printed. So they can mine it from where the light is coming from, from the expression.

I dont know how they do it. But thats my actual face, Ford continued. Then I put little dots on my face and I say the words and they make [it]. Its fantastic.

The creation of the great science fiction writer, Arthur C. Clarke, HALshort for Heuristically Programmed Algorithmic Computerprophetically possessed skills like speech recognition, facial recognition, and natural language processing that are now commonplace. However, in Clarkes vision, HAL malfunctions because it cannot reconcile the conflict between its general mission of relaying information accurately and its mission orders requiring that it withhold certain information from the crew. In short, HAL malfunctioned because it was forced to lie.

Many have questioned whether an artificial intelligence (AI) could learn, on its own, to develop its own motivation for returning false information, effectively telling a lie. Some have even posited that a truly sophisticated AI will necessarily need to understand how to lie in order to effectively interact with humans, who are not known for 100% veracity (this should not be viewed as an indictment of people; even animals learn to lie, although with the exception of Koko the gorilla who used sign language to blame her pet cat for damaging a sink, they dont necessarily communicate the lies the way people do).

DOD committed to ethical use of artificial intelligence – aetc.af.mil

WASHINGTON --

The Defense Department is prioritizing ethical considerations and collaboration in its approach to developing and fielding military applications of artificial intelligence, a top Pentagon technology official said June 15.

Michael C. Horowitz, the director of the emerging capabilities policy office in the office of the undersecretary of defense for policy, underscored the U.S.' commitment to leading the international conversation surrounding artificial intelligence during a panel discussion in Washington on setting rules and expectations for emerging technologies in national security.

Underpinning this commitment, Horowitz said, is a comprehensive set of policy decisions within DOD that governs the development and fielding of autonomous weapon systems, ethical artificial intelligence strategy, and the development of responsible artificial intelligence strategy and pathways.

U.S. leadership, in codifying these principles, is now driving responsible artificial intelligence policy formulation among international partners, he said.

"If you look at NATO's ethical AI principles, for example, they're very similar to the Defense Department's ethical AI principles and that's not that's not an accident," Horowitz said. "It reflects in many ways the sort of common values and perspective on how we're thinking about... when we would want to use AI and how."

He said U.S. also led on the international stage by issuing its Political Declaration of Responsible Military use of Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy in February.

"That's a set of strong norms that lay out principles of what responsible use looks like that we're now working to bring other countries on board to endorse since we think that bringing the international community together on this issue, that there is a lot of possibility for cooperation and we want to encourage the rest of the world to take these issues as seriously as the department has," Horowitz said. "And in looking at our allies and partners, we're really encouraged by that."

That commitment to the responsible development of artificial intelligence, and its transparency concerning the development of policy surrounding emerging technologies, is also how the U.S. has distinguished itself from its global competitors, he said.

He said all DOD policy surrounding artificial intelligence and emerging technology is publicly available.

"That's in contrast to some of the competitors of the United States who are a lot less transparent in what their policies are concerning the development and use of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems, including autonomous weapons systems," Horowitz said. "And we think that there's a real distinction there."

At the same time, the U.S. has remained committed to being at the leading edge of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, Horowitz said.

He said the rapid advance of the technology has opened up a wide array of use cases for artificial intelligence beyond defense. The U.S. continues to be "an engine of innovation when it comes to AI."

"The Defense Department does lots and lots of different experimentation with emerging technologies," Horowitz said. "And we both want to do them in a safe and responsible way, but also want to do them in a way that can push forward the cutting edge and ensure the department has access to the emerging technologies that it needs to stay ahead."

Moore to the Point: Artificial intelligence is here. Is South Carolina … – Upstate Business Journal

As we move further into the 21st century, it is becoming increasingly clear that artificial intelligence will play a major role in shaping the future of our economy and our world. It is already presenting unprecedented opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship. It also poses a significant challenge for our state, as up to 40% of jobs in South Carolina are at risk of being automated by AI in the next 15 years. That is over 700,000 of our neighbors whose jobs will likely be impacted soon. Considering that AI is developing faster than anyone anticipated, including the AI experts, these job displacements could also be arriving sooner than anticipated.

To ensure South Carolina and its communities are well prepared to compete in the future economy, we must take bold action. I believe there are two important steps we should take immediately.

First, we should identify and engage with various AI experts, locally and globally, to help understand the threats and opportunities facing us and to guide our planning for the future. Too often, incumbent stakeholders dominate planning activities for a state or community, but that approach has an inherent weakness during times of dramatic change. Its at those times that we need the change agents themselves to help inform and guide the forward thinking since they are more knowledgeable about where things are heading than those of us trying to catch up. It will be imperative that we find the right AI expertise to come alongside our established leadership and bring us up to speed on the challenges and opportunities we are facing.

Second, we should develop a statewide AI strategy with government, industry and academic leaders at the table. However, the effort should be led, once again, by experts in the field of AI. Its imperative that our strategy be well informed and action oriented with clear public accountability for results. A successful strategy will help ensure that South Carolina is well-positioned to take advantage of the opportunities presented by AI while simultaneously mitigating the risk. It would likely include efforts to develop the AI talent pool, encourage collaboration and innovation across industries, and create incentives to entice AI research and commercialization here.

As we work to prepare our state for the impact of AI on jobs and our economy, it is important to remember that AI is both a threat and an opportunity. By embracing and understanding AI and the foundational changes it is creating, we can better position our economic development strategies and resources to ensure South Carolina remains a leader in the global economy for years to come.

Peter Drucker once said, The greatest danger in times of turbulence is not the turbulence itself, but to act with yesterdays logic. Lets take action now to ensure our state is well prepared for the future and not rely on yesterdays logic when planning for tomorrow.
