Dallas Comedy House Will Reopen With a New Name and Look – Eater Dallas

Dallas Comedy House, the longtime Deep Ellum performance venue that closed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will reopen this fall with a new look, new name, and new mission to bring comedy to the Dallas scene.

Ian and Rosie Caruth, former Dallas Comedy House performers, have taken over the space at 3036 Elm Street and renamed it Dallas Comedy Club. Its slated to open in September after renovations, with several classrooms, two enclosed theaters indoors, and an outdoor stage. The original venues beer garden and full-service restaurant will also be updated.

Ian Caruth, who grew up in Dallas, has spent time in comedy circles in New York City and Chicago, including practices at the Upright Citizens Brigade, he tells PaperCity. He and Rosie met following an improv show in New York.

The couple tells PaperCity they want to preserve most of the feel of Dallas Comedy House, but have a few updates in mind to modernize the experience, like adding camera setups so improv classes and comedy performances can happen over Zoom as well as in person.

The original Dallas Comedy House was founded in 2009 on Commerce Street, according to the Dallas Morning News. It moved to a location on Main Street in 2015, and then to the Elm Street spot in 2019 following a dispute with the Main Street landlord. For 11 years, it served as an entertainment mainstay in Deep Ellum, until the novel coronavirus hit. The venue hosted a few events throughout the summer, but struggle with reduced capacity and curfews, eventually closing for good on July 2.

Caruth tells PaperCity that Comedy Houses founder Amanda Austin, was a hero who helped put alternative comedy on the map in Dallas. In a press release, he said he hopes to honor the previous clubs legacy with the new Dallas Comedy Club.

When we relocated to Dallas, Dallas Comedy House became our home stage and was an important part of our story, he said. Rosie and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring comedy back to life in Deep Ellum.
