DU introduces MA in Hindu Studies along with Data Analytics … – Education Times

The University of Delhi (DU) in its centenary year has set up a Centre ForHinduStudiesoffering an MA in the subject in the academic year 2023,along with a few morenew centres forstudies.Registration for the course is on and the University has received applications from a wide range of graduates from across the country. The program aims to combine traditional knowledge ofHindu philosophy with contemporary subjects such as computer science, data analytics, commerce, and political science.

While Nalanda University, BanarasHinduUniversity (BHU), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and 20 other institutes in India have been offeringHinduStudies for several years, DU initiated this course much later. Several courses on religious subjects have been successfully running at DU for the last several decades. The Universities have programmes in subjects such as Buddhist Studies, IslamicStudies, andChristianStudieshowever,HinduStudies has been launched after 66 years.

Talking toEducation Times,Prerna Malhotra, joint director, Centre forHinduStudies, says, Several prominent Western institutions including the Oxford University, University of Cambridge, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University have already been offering courses onHinduStudies. India is relatively late in introducing the subject in educational institutes. India has aHindu majority, but the subject is taught only in 20 universities so far, says Malhotra.

The course is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020s progressive provision. Besides religious philosophy, the students will study contemporary subjects such as Computer Science, Data Analytics, Commerce, and Political Science as a minor. The course has a major focus on theoretical curriculum, which will include the essence ofHindu dharma, Upanishads and Vedas. It will also include a mandatory paper on Western methods such as critical and analytical theory, papers on Ramayana and Mahabharata and a paper on English or Sanskrit language, says Malhotra.

The curriculum has been designed in a manner that is open for students from varied fields so that students from any discipline can apply for the course.

Several new jobs are being created in the realm of religiousstudies, thus, the pass-out students will have multiple opportunities. After finishing the course, students can take the National Eligibility Test (NET) to work as assistant professors or research fellows. Being aHindu life coach is yet another job that is gaining popularity. These coaches are involved in religious counselling at various corporates. They can also be hired as columnists or writers for various media houses and TV Channels. Apart from this, students will be able to continue with their minor degree as a career option as offered by the university, says Malhotra.
