Symantec has signed a three-year deal with Fujitsu to co-locate its servers in the vendors Sydney data centre, thereby doubling capacity of its Cloud services and setting the company up to sign more email archiving customers in Australia.

The contract, which was signed for an undisclosed amount, followed a tender process which took place in mid-2011. Symantec also uses a data centre run by Equinix in Sydney to host its Cloud services.

Symantec.cloud Asia-Pacific and Japan vice president, Brenton Smith, said that its strategy for 2013 was to grow its email archiving customer base since its acquisition of a Cloud-based data archiving company called LiveOffice.

Weve been actively selling this service for the last 12 months so there are now 150 [email archiving] customers in Australia, Smith said. They range from large enterprises to small businesses who want to archive their email in the Cloud.

Despite the new deal with Fujitsu, Smith said the company would continue to work with Equinix in Sydney.

Equinix were part of the tender process but circumstances and location made it more sensible for us to take the Fujitsu bid, he said. Were growing our [Cloud] services quite steadily so we needed a facility that enabled us to have disaster recovery capability.

According to Smith, the extra capacity was needed as the vendor is seeing growth in mail and Web services demand.

Archiving in the Cloud is also taking off for us in the Australian market and some customers are requesting that their data is kept within Australia, he said.

Symantec also uses data centres for its Cloud services in Singapore, Japan and Hong Kong.
