Google Cloud has just knocked a load of customers offline for the second time this month – TechRadar

In a week already marked with controversy after Google Cloud accidentally deleted the entire account of Australian pension fund UniSuper, the tech giant has stumbled again.

At 15:22 PT last Thursday, a maintenance automation, intended to shut down an unused network control component at a single location, malfunctioned.

Instead of targeting only one site, the process inadvertently affected around 40 locations, taking many customers offline in the process.

The blunder led to nearly three hours of downtime, disrupting 33 Google Cloud Services for affected users including high-profile offerings like the Compute Engine and Kubernetes Engine.

Some of the issues included the provision of new VM instances without network connectivity, VM migrations and restarted systems losing connection, and configurations like firewalls and network load balancers not updating.

Operations reliant on Google Cloud Engine VMs were severely impacted during the few hours, until the incident concluded at 18:10 PT, just in time for the weekend.

Google attributed the outage to a bug in the automation tool used for the maintenance. A network status page reads: Google engineers restarted the affected component, restoring normal operation.

Sign up to the TechRadar Pro newsletter to get all the top news, opinion, features and guidance your business needs to succeed!

The cloud hosting giant added: We extend our sincerest apologies for the service interruption incurred as a result of this service outage.

Just over a week before, services like Google Big Query and Google Compute Engine were taken offline during what Google described as an unplanned power event caused by a power failover due to a utility company outage.

The previous week, Google also hit the headlines for accidentally deleting UniSupers account in a one-of-a-kind occurrence, a company that had an estimated $124 billion in funds under management last summer.

For now, businesses and users alike remain on edge, hoping that Google Cloud puts in the work to prevent other similar outages.

Microsoft starts rolling out OneDrive’s offline mode on the web – The Verge

The new OneDrive offline mode will let users of the web side of the service open files that have been marked available as offline and navigate to favorite files and the home section of OneDrive without an internet connection. You can also rename, sort, move, and copy files, and these will all be synced up once you have an internet connection again.

The offline mode also has performance improvements even if you do have an internet connection. Microsoft claims theres up to 3x faster loading when viewing or interacting with files in OneDrive on the web or from the OneDrive app in Teams or Outlook. Offline mode uses your devices local storage to store certain file information such as file name, size, author, last date accessed, etc, explains Andrey Esipov, a principal product manager at Microsoft. This is made possible through the OneDrive Sync app, which intelligently stores a cache of your files metadata locally.

OneDrives offline mode on the web wont be available to consumers just yet, but those using a Microsoft 365 business or school account can set up the new feature right now. Youll need the latest OneDrive sync app for Windows or macOS; then, you simply head into OneDrive on the web in Chrome or Edge, and it will trigger an automatic one-time set up of offline mode.

This new offline mode also compliments the existing Files On-Demand feature thats available in OneDrive through File Explorer or in Finder on Mac. You can now control the Files On-Demand feature within your browser so you can select files to always be available on your computer.

Microsoft OneDrive adds offline mode to web app to rival Google Drive – Android Authority

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority

TL;DR

There are many cloud storage and file-sharing services available, but most people stick to solutions from Apple, Google, and Microsoft for their daily needs. Apple iCloud, Google Drive, and Microsoft OneDrive perform the same general functions, but there are slight differences in features and approach. Microsoft has updated OneDrive to add offline capabilities, which rival Google Drive has had for a few years.

As announced by Microsoft, OneDrive on the web is getting offline mode. This mode will let you use OneDrive in your favorite browser even when you dont have an internet connection. Offline mode is rolling out globally to OneDrive work and school users.

Expectedly, you need to designate files and folders as available for offline access first. You can then access those files even when you dont have an internet connection. You can also free up local storage space by making your local files and folders online directly from OneDrive for the web. Both actions were previously available through File Explorer on Windows PC and Finder on Max, but you can now carry these out directly from OneDrive on your browser.

Microsoft says that OneDrives offline mode lets you open and interact with OneDrives Home, My files, Shared, Favorites, People, and Meeting views. You can view your folders, file names, and metadata. You can also use the My files view to rename, sort, move and copy files, though the changes will expectedly sync to OneDrive when you get back your internet connection.

Google Drive has had similar functionality for a few years now. You can select the make file available offline option to access the file without an internet connection in the future. Such functionality requires a bit of foresight, but it helps you easily work in a hybrid (online-offline) environment.

Have you tried out offline mode in Microsoft OneDrive? Let us know your experience in the comments below!

What is Google One? – Mashable

Google offers a range of productivity products, across Drive, Gmail, and Photos, and with all of it, storage is a consideration. Every Google account hands users 15 gigabytes of free cloud storage across these products, but for many, this isn't enough.

Enter Google One, the company's subscription cloud storage service. Here's a guide to the service and how it works.

Google One is a cloud storage service that offers different tiered membership plans for monthly fees. The service can be used for Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos.

There are other benefits to the service, including photo effects, discounts on Google products, and access to Google experts for various tech questions. Certain plans also now offer access to Google's AI tool.

While Google Drive offers free storage to users, Google One replaced Drive's storage plans back in 2018. Drive is now a place exclusively for files and documents. One is a subscription service.

Mashable Light Speed

Google One offers various membership plans.

100-GB Basic Plan: For $2 per month or $20 per year (1.59 or 16 in the UK)

200-GB Standard Plan: For $3 per month or $30 per year (2.49 or 25 in the UK)

2-TB Premium Plan: For $10 per month or $100 per year (8 or 80 in the UK)

2-TB AI Premium Plan: For $20 per month (19 in the UK)

For every plan, starting from the Basic tier, family-sharing is allowed for up to five people.

Tiers vary after that, with the 2TB Premium Plan, for example, offering Google Workspace benefits. The AI-Premium plan, meanwhile, offers all Premium benefits alongside AI-powered products: Gemini Advanced, and Gemini integration into Gmail and Docs.

There are other plan options with increased storage, but as Wired points out, it is unlikely that 2TB won't be enough.

5TB: $25 per month or $250 per year (20 or 200 in the UK)

10TB: $50 per month (40 in the UK).

20TB: $100 per month (80 in the UK).

30TB: $150 per month (120 in the UK)

Head over to Google One and sign up using your Google login. From there, you can choose your preferred membership plan.

Google Cloud Posts 28 Percent Revenue Jump In Q1 2024 Thanks To AI, Says CEO – CRN

The growth were seeing across [Google] Cloud is underpinned by the benefit AI provides for our customers, Ruth Porat, president, chief investment officer and CFO, said during Google parent Alphabets first-quarter 2024 earnings call Thursday.

Google parent Alphabet credited its strong first fiscal quarter of the year to solid Google Search and Google Cloud revenue.

For the first quarter of 2024 ended March 31, Google Cloud, the worlds third largest cloud computing company, generated $9.57 billion, up an impressive 28 percent from $7.45 billion a year ago.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that cloud business continues to grow as the company brings the best of Google artificial intelligence to enterprise customers around the world.

Our differentiation in cloud begins with our AI Hypercomputer, which provides efficient and cost-effective infrastructure to train models. Today, more than 60 percent of funded GenAI startups and nearly 90 percent of GenAI unicorns are Google Cloud customers, Pichai said.

As an example of the momentum the company is seeing in cloud thanks to AI, the Google One offering, which bundles cloud storage, AI capabilities and other Google features in one shareable plan, has crossed more than 100 million paid subscribers. In the first quarter, Google also recently introduced a premium AI plan called Gemini Advanced.

[Related: Google Cloud Applying AI To Our Whole Partner Incentive Portfolio: Google Exec]

Google during its first-quarter 2024 earnings call Thursday pointed to popular brands such as Beyer, Mercedes Benz and Walmart that are seeing generative AI success with Google Cloud, Pichai said.

The company over the past eight months has launched more than 1,000 new products and features as part of the Google Cloud Platform.

Google Cloud was not profitable until the company reported in first-quarter 2023 that the segment had generated $191 million in operating income. Prior to that, the company was investing billions each quarter to expand its global cloud infrastructure and services reach.

Google Cloud generates its sales from the Google Cloud Platform, platform services, infrastructure and collaboration tools such as Google Workspace. It takes in revenue primarily from consumption-based fees and subscriptions from Google Cloud Platform services, Workspace tools and other services.

Ruth Porat, the companys president, chief investment officer and CFO, said that Google Clouds performance during the first quarter reflects strong demand for Google Cloud Platform infrastructure and offerings, as well as for Googles Workspace productivity tools.

The growth were seeing across cloud is underpinned by the benefit AI provides for our customers. We continue to invest aggressively while remaining focused on profitable growth, she said.

Gemini, Googles AI-powered agent, is built into Google Workspace tools, including Gmail, Docs and Sheets. Google recently introduced Gemini for Meetings and Messaging and Gemini for Workspace security.

Customers are choosing Workspace because they have deep trust in our powerful security and privacy features. Our cloud business is now widely seen as the leader in cybersecurity, Pichai added.

Google announced earlier this month that it would be consolidating the teams that focus on building AI models across Google Research and Google DeepMind in a move the company said would further accelerate progress in AI.

Google Cloud, which delivered operating income of $900 million during the quarter, accounted for nearly 12 percent of Googles total revenue of $80.54 billion in first-quarter 2024.

Google bested Wall Street expectations of $78.59 billion during its first fiscal quarter of the year. The company also beat Wall Streets expectations for YouTube advertising revenue and cloud revenue.

Parent Alphabets stock climbed more than 12 percent in after-hours activity on news of the earnings results.
