Nodeum punching above its weight in Euro HPC market Blocks … – Blocks & Files

Belgium-based Nodeum is a 10-person outfit with its file management software used by 30 customers, including five of the top European high-performance computing centers. How did such a small company achieve this level of influence?

Its software is used to manage the storage of file data, moving it from primary through to secondary (disk) and tertiary (cloud, tape) storage classic hierarchical file storage lifecycle management in other words. This is an area with well-known suppliers such as Komprise, SpectraLogic (StorCycle), Atempo (Miria), and Quantum (StorNext), yet Nodeum has built up a customer base despite heavyweight competition.

CEO and co-founder Valry Guilleaume said Nodeum was indeed a small company, with annual revenues around 1 million ($1.1 million).

HPC customers include the Jlich Supercomputing Centre, Barcelona Supercomputing Centre, and the CSCS Swiss National Supercomputing Centre, plus Fenix and its confederation of six European HPC sites in the Human Brain Project research initiative.

They have taken on board Nodeums concept of a three-tier archive immediate access, intermediate access, and a long-term archive pool.

The company was founded in 2015, and launched its first product in 2016. The initial customer in the Germany-Austria-Switzerland (DACH) region was won in 2020, which was also when a UK distribution agreement was set up.

Nodeum has no formal go-to-market organization, being mostly engineers who have built a large-scale, POSIX-compliant file system with dataset retention, metadata, indexation, and data movement capabilities. This system can work with an HPC sites Lustre and GPFS parallel file system software, and Nodeum understands HPC workflows and use of multiple different file and tape storage suppliers systems.

As an example, the Fenix system has an automatic data mover migrating objects between active data (parallel file systems) repositories and archival (cloud) data repositories for the federation of six European sites. The Nodeum software handles data transfer between cloud object stores with a Swift interface and fast parallel file systems with POSIX interfaces. It also integrates with Slurm, an HPC workload manager. There is a public API and SDK to facilitate integration with individual research applications.

The current software is being extended with data classification, self-provisioning, and a GUI coming in the second 2024 quarter.

The five European HPC centers became customers in 2021. They and other customers wanted Nodeum to add scalability to higher capacities exabyte-level and this is why it has been developing its gen 2 product with a microservices, cloud-native architecture, and an end-to-end parallel design.

Our understanding is that the European HPC scene is a relatively small market niche and its people talk to each other. Information about Nodeums capabilities spread by word of mouth.

Other customers include the University of Rostov, Graz Medical University, Akquinet Data Center Services (object storage to tape), MPC Episodic & Film, and a space industry concern in Asia.

Guilleaume said Nodeum was talking to a European bank about a 1 PB object archive, with data being moved from source systems to flash storage. This is, he said, very early days, but its an example of how Nodeums HPC base is helping to generate sales prospects in adjacent markets.

This quite small European file storage management supplier punches well above its weight in the regions HPC and allied markets, and it will likely need to build a go-to-market organization if and when its customer numbers head toward and past the 100 count.

HP has yet another fantastic deal, this time coming from Walmart, from the same family as the $179 HP laptop deal we found earlier. The HP Laptop 15 costs just $249 and yet delivers the sort of firepower youd see on a laptop twice the price.

At its heart is an Intel Core i3-1215U processor; now, this is no ordinary Core i3, it has six cores which makes it far more powerful than previous Core i3 models. For example, it is about 80% faster than the Core i3-1115G4, which is only one year older.

Like many mainstream laptops, it also has 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. Unlike most though, the memory is dual channel, which means you can expect slightly better performance. Its 15.6-inch display is a full HD model, rather than the HD resolution Im used to seeing in this price range. The color gamut and the brightness however are poor, as expected, but it is an acceptable compromise at this price.

It has a separate numeric keypad, five ports, two microphones, an HD webcam, a card reader, two speakers, Wi-Fi 6, and 41WHr battery (which HP claims will last around 450 minutes). It weighs in at 1.7kg, which is really not bad at all for a laptop with a 15.6-inch display.

Note that it is made mostly of recycled plastic, which is a step in the right direction of building more sustainability in technology. The laptop runs on Windows 11 Home in S mode but you can swap it to the classic Windows 11 Home for free.

There are two other notable features that set it apart from other laptops costing $300 and less, too. The first is the fact it comes with 25GB Dropbox cloud storage for a year. The second is the inclusion of a fingerprint reader, making it ideal for anyone looking for an affordable business laptop with added security features.

As new applications, use cases and connected devices multiply, Western Digital is deploying advanced hard disk drive (HDD) technologies to help data centers design more cost-efficient, scalable and sustainable infrastructure. In a recent release, the company announced that it is now shipping its new 10-disk 24TB CMR HDD family for hyperscale, cloud and enterprise data center customers.

According to the announcement, the new 28TB SMR HDD is also ramping up, and the 26TB SMR HDD exabyte shipments reportedly reached nearly half of its data center exabytes shipped in the first quarter fiscal year 2024.

With these new offerings, Western Digital is once again proving that hard drives are not just keeping pace, they are forging a path forward, ensuring that data-intensive applications of today and tomorrow have a strong foundation to build on while the industry prepares for HAMR, said Ed Burns, Research Director, Hard Disk Drive and Storage Technologies, IDC. We are seeing strong momentum for Western Digitals SMR HDDs and believe that SMR adoption will continue to grow as their new 28TB SMR HDD offers the next compelling TCO value proposition that cloud customers cannot ignore.

This new generation of drives is built on a proven platform and is designed for data center customers who are consistently looking for the highest capacity storage to help them achieve the lowest possible total cost of ownership (TCO), WD said in the release. These high-capacity HDDs reportedly are a step forward in meeting the companys sustainability targets and toward helping data center customers meet theirs in that the 28TB and 24TB HDDs are built with 40 percent (by weight) recycled content, and are more than 10 percent more energy efficient per terabyte.

Product Details

At 28TB, the new Ultrastar DC HC680 SMR HDD is designed for storage density in hyperscale, cloud and enterprise applications, WD said. The company said it is ideal for sequential write workloads where storage density, watt/TB and $/TB are critical parameters, and it targets environments such as bulk storage, online backup and archive, video surveillance, cloud storage, storage for regulatory compliance, big data storage, and other applications where data may be infrequently accessed.

The Ultrastar DC HC580 24TB CMR HDD with improved OptiNAND technology is the next step in data density, according to the announcement, and is set to allow data center customers to maximize storage within the same footprint, and in power-constrained environments. For better storage density, the HC580 reportedly can enable up to 612TB of raw storage per rack unit in a 4U 102-drive bay solution. These drives are also more power efficient, providing 12 percent less Watt/TB2 compared to the companys previous 22TB version.

The Ultrastar DC HC680 and HC580 HDDs are currently being qualified by select hyperscalers, CSPs and OEM customers, and are now available for large enterprise customers looking for the highest capacity with lower power per terabyte for designing more efficient storage systems and data centers.

The new Ultrastar drives are also being qualified and integrated into the companys Ultrastar Data60 and Data102 JBOD hybrid storage platforms, which are key building blocks for designing next-generation disaggregated storage and software-defined storage (SDS) infrastructure, WD said. Each storage platform comes with IsoVibe and ArcticFlow technologies for improved performance and reliability. Ultrastar Data60 and Data102 platforms with the new HDDs will be available beginning next month.

Western Digital also announced that it is now shipping its 24TB WD Gold CMR SATA HDD into the channel. These drives, the company said, are specifically designed for system integrators and resellers serving enterprises and SMBs who need more reliable storage for big data and enterprise storage workloads compared to traditional client HDDs. Leveraging innovations from the Ultrastar technology platform, features vibration protection technology, is designed to handle workloads up to 550TB per year, and comes with a 5-year limited warranty.

Apple’s Sales Drop Slightly While Profit Is Up 11 Percent – The New York Times

At a time when the tech industrys biggest companies are rebounding from a post-pandemic dip, Apple is suffering through its most prolonged sales slump in more than a decade.

On Thursday, the worlds most valuable tech company said that sales fell 1 percent, to $89.5 billion, from last year for the three months that ended in September, bringing an end to a fiscal year in which it posted sales declines every quarter. The company reported that profits rose 11 percent, to $22.96 billion.

Apples most important business, the iPhone, rallied last month behind the release of four new devices, which boosted sales 3 percent, to $43.81 billion, from last year. And the companys sales for software and services, such as Apple Music and cloud storage, jumped 16 percent, to $22.31 billion.

But sales sank for most of the companys other businesses, including the Mac, iPad, and the Apple Watch and AirPods. Total product sales dropped by 5 percent, to $67.18 billion.

The results exceeded Wall Streets expectations for $89.34 billion in sales and $21.77 billion in profit. The company said that it expected sales to be similar in the current quarter to the same period a year ago, disappointing Wall Street, which had projected that sales would increase from a year ago.

Apples shares have declined 11 percent from their peak this summer and were down more than 3 percent in after-hour trading on Thursday.

Tim Cook, Apples chief executive, faces a bevy of challenges in the year ahead. After a surge in demand for new 5G iPhones, wireless carriers are reporting a slowdown in the number of people buying new smartphones in the United States, Apples largest market, according to Arete Research, an investment research firm.

The company said that supply constraints for the iPhone 15 in September blunted sales during the month, but that supplies were improving and would be able to fulfill demand in the current quarter.

In China, Apple is confronting renewed competition in the luxury smartphone business from Huawei. The Chinese smartphone maker had been hampered in recent years by U.S. restrictions on its access to 5G technology and Android software, but in August it revealed a jade-green smartphone, Mate 60 Pro, that has the same capabilities as many iPhones. Its release was followed by the Chinese government directing employees of some government agencies to stop using iPhones for work.

Sales of Apples new flagship iPhones declined 4.5 percent during the final weeks of September from last year, according to Counterpoint Research, which analyzes the smartphone market. The dip was an outgrowth of the broader downturn in consumer spending in China, the firm said.

Last month, China expanded its challenge to Apples business by launching a regulatory review of the companys biggest iPhone manufacturer, Foxconn of Taiwan. The manufacturer is facing a tax audit and being investigated over its compliance with land use regulations. The scrutiny comes as Terry Gou, Foxconns founder, runs for Taiwans presidency in a campaign that could boost the ruling party, which opposes closer ties with Beijing.

Mr. Cook traveled to China last month in an unannounced visit that included stops at an Apple store, a visit to the factory of Luxshare Precision, a Chinese iPhone manufacturer, and a meeting with Wang Wentao, the countrys commerce minister.

I could not be more excited about the interactions I had with customers and employees, Mr. Cook said during a call with analysts on Thursday. He said that the companys business in China remained strong, adding that the iPhone business set a record in mainland China during the three months that ended in September.

The broader tech industry has been lifted by enthusiasm for generative artificial intelligence. Last month, Microsoft reported that investments in A.I. were beginning to help sales of its cloud-computing business. Googles parent company, Alphabet, which has invested heavily in A.I., disappointed investors, who had hoped for a greater lift to sales. Amazon and Meta Platforms, Facebooks parent company, also emphasized their investments in that area.

But Apple, which is known for its secrecy, has been quiet about its plans for generative A.I. On Thursday, Mr. Cook said that the company was investing in generative A.I. but was unlikely to provide details until it had a product to bring to market. Were going to do it responsibly, and youre going to see product advancements over time where those technologies are at the heart, Mr. Cook said.

As it looks ahead to next year, much of the companys focus will shift to the release of its first major new product since 2014: high-tech goggles that blend the real world with virtual reality. The $3,500 device, the Vision Pro, has the potential to provide a new revenue stream at a time when sales of its other products have slowed. Analysts project Apple will sell fewer than half a million units.

The company also is focused on reviving sales of its iPads and Macs. On Monday, Apple revealed new MacBook Pros and iMacs with speedier processors and encouraged customers with older Macs to upgrade. Sales of Macs declined 27 percent, to $29.36 billion, over the past fiscal year.

Dell GA’s APEX Cloud Platform for Red Hat OpenShift – The New Stack

Dell Technologies recently announced the general availability of its Apex Cloud Platform for Red Hat OpenShift, a turnkey infrastructure platform aimed at simplifying the deployment of microservices containers. It is designed to run in data centers and connect to multiple cloud services.

Apex is the first fully integrated application delivery platform purposely engineered for Red Hat OpenShift, the company said. It was jointly engineered with Red Hat for Dell PowerEdge servers using new, fourth-generation Intel processors. Apex is designed to upgrade how organizations deploy, manage and run containers alone or alongside virtual machines, Dell said.

OpenShift is a hybrid cloud application platform that automates many of the manual processes involved in containerizing, deploying and managing applications. It is built on top of Kubernetes, which has become a de facto cloud operating system for an increasing number of enterprises. The APEX/OpenShift package is bolstered by high-performance infrastructure and advanced DevOps automation tools.

Dell provides several options for the platforms deployment. They are: ground-to-cloud, which brings Apex to the public cloud; cloud-to-ground, enabling the deployment of modern cloud software stacks fully integrated on Dell data center infrastructure; and as-a-service, which brings the subscription cloud to dedicated on-premises environments. Apex Cloud Platform falls under the cloud-to-ground category.

Dell APEX Cloud Platform for Red Hat OpenShift is easily managed through the OpenShift console, so theres no additional steps needed or a need to leave your OpenShift environment to manage your infrastructure, Caitlin Gordon, Dell VP of DevOps product management, told The New Stack. It also includes deep DevOps automation tools and lifecycle management tools that allow developers to move faster, as theyll be focused less on infrastructure management and more on getting critical applications out the door.

While the Dell message indicates that Apex is custom-designed for OpenShift, the same platform also has been customized previously for Microsoft Azure.

Gordon said that the Apex-OpenShift package helps optimize the placement of workloads in physical data centers or in single or multiple cloud deployments.

This features the same software-defined storage as Dell public cloud storage offerings, so devs and IT teams can easily move their applications between on-premises and public cloud environments, Gordon said.

Key features

The availability of Dell Apex Cloud Platform for Red Hat OpenShift comes at a time when enterprises are planning to modernize their IT environments so that they can make application development and workload placements more efficient.

This move toward containers has been a trend for several years. IT researcher Gartner estimates that more than 95% of global enterprises will be running containerized applications in production alone or alongside virtual machines by 2028. Mayor Bowser Announces Distribution Dates for Dash Cam Program … – Executive Office of the Mayor

(Washington, DC) Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser, the Mayors Office of Nightlife and Culture (MONC), the Department of For Hire Vehicles (DFHV), and DoorDash announced distribution dates for the program that will provide dash cams to District rideshare and mobile delivery drivers at no cost. This program, announced earlier this year, is funded in part by a $500,000 investment from DoorDash. Dash cams will be distributed on Tuesday, November 7 and Tuesday, November 14 from 9 amthrough 5 pmat RFK Parking Lot 3, located at 2400 East Capitol Street NE, with no appointment necessary.

We encourage eligible rideshare and delivery drivers to take advantage of this free dash cam distribution program, said Mayor Bowser. Cameras help deter crime and video evidence is often critical for closing cases. These dash cams are one more tool we have for keeping people safe and holding criminals accountable.

Eligible District residents who work as rideshare and mobile delivery drivers will receive dash cams they can install in their cars to record audio and video of their trips, deter crime, and assist law enforcement in solving crimes committed on and near for-hire vehicle drivers. Dash cams will be equipped with microSD cards to store video directly, and drivers will have the ability to independently connect their cameras to cloud storage services for later use.

This dash cam distribution program follows the Districts partnership with Hyundai this summer to provide Hyundai owners with critical software updates and the expansion of the Metropolitan Police Departments (MPD) wheel lock distribution program.
