Iranian Charming Kitten Group Evolves Tools and Tactics – Duo Security

An Iranian state-sponsored threat group known for targeting diplomats, foreign policy experts, and government officials recently has employed a new infection chain and lure in an operation aimed at a nuclear security expert at a United States think tank.

The operation, identified by researchers at Proofpoint, is the work of a group known as Charming Kitten that is known to support the interests of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and has consistently targeted journalists, policy experts, and other key figures in sectors of interest to the Iranian government. Charming Kitten is also known as TA453 and APT42 and in the recent operation the group used a simple, benign email to begin a relationship with the target. The attackers then sent a follow-up email that contained a malicious macro that pointed to a Dropbox URL. That URL hosted a .rar file that in turn contained an LNK file.

Using a .rar and LNK file to deploy malware differs from TA453s typical infection chain of using VBA macros or remote template injection. The LNK enclosed in the RAR used PowerShell to download additional stages from a cloud hosting provider, a new analysis by Proofpoint says.

Following the dropper using obfuscated PowerShell to call out to the cloud hosting provider, the malware uses the Gorjol function to download base64 encoded content from a .txt file. The downloaded content is decoded and invoked, becoming the function Borjol. Borjol communicates over AES encrypted HTTPS with the attacker-registered subdomain fuschia-rhinestone.cleverapps[.]io via the legitimate Clever Cloud service, which allows users to host JavaScript applications in the cloud. The returned data decrypts into another Borjol function. This new function uses previous variables and results in decrypting the PowerShell backdoor, dubbed GorjolEcho.

After the backdoor was delivered to the victim, the TA453 attackers eventually realized that it wasnt working as intended, because the victims machine was an Apple and the malware was designed for a Windows system. So the attackers went back to work and redesigned their infection chain to work on macOS and included a new backdoor that Proofpoint calls NokNok. The ZIP archive containing the NokNok backdoor was disguised as a VPN client.

The bespoke VPN application masquerades as a VPN application GUI. Upon initialization, it executes an Apple script file, which uses curl to download a file from library- store[.]camdvr[.]org/DMPR/[alphanumeric string]. At the time of analysis, library- store.camdvr[.]org was resolving to 144.217.129[.]176, an OVH IP. This second stage is a bash script dubbed NokNok that establishes a backdoor on the system. It generates a system identifier by combining the operating system name, hostname, and a random number. That system identifier is then encrypted with the NokNok function and base64 encoded before being used as the payload of an HTTP POST to library-store.camdvr[.]org, the analysis says.

The NokNok backdoor has four discrete modules, each with a separate function, including a mobile for persistence. There are overlaps between the functionality of NokNok and an older backdoor used by the same threat group, known as GhostEcho. TA453 has shown persistence and versatility in its operations over the years and is continuing to adapts its tools and tactics.

TA453 continues to significantly adapt its infection chains to complicate detection efforts and conduct cyber espionage operations against its targets of interest. The use of Google Scripts, Dropbox, and CleverApps demonstrate that TA453 continues to subscribe to a multi-cloud approach in its efforts to likely minimize disruptions from threat hunters. TA453s willingness to port malware to Mach-O also demonstrates how much effort the threat actor is willing to put into pursuing its targets, the Proofpoint researchers said.

AAI signs deal with SITA, 43 airports to adopt cloud-based technologies for passenger, bag processing – Deccan Herald

Forty-three airports across the country are set to adopt cloud-based technologies for passenger and baggage processing with global airlines IT services solution major SITA signing a deal with the Airport Authority of India (AAI), according to officials.

The deal will see improvement in over 2,700 passenger touchpoints, paving way for the adoption of new-age solutions to meet modern passengers' expectations.

Initially deployed across 43 airports, the technologies are scalable to an additional 40 airports over the next seven years. Over 500 million passengers are expected to be processed during this period.

"The solutions will give passengers more control over their journey, offering a low-touch, efficient check-in, bag drop, and collection process through assisted and self-service mechanisms. The airports will benefit from a reduced infrastructure footprint and increased operational efficiency. At the same time, airlines will see service charges drop and can take advantage of an agile technology platform to build bespoke passenger experiences," Sumesh Patel, president, Asia Pacific, SITA, told a press conference.

"The adoption of cloud solutions also brings new agility and flexibility to scale airport operations efficiently as passenger numbers grow. The cloud first approach enforces better security and offers airlines a platform to host new progressive technologies and move away from native applications. Centralised cloud hosting of all servers means reduced on-premise infrastructure costs and results in centralised control, enabling proactive monitoring and control of services," he added.

Patel explained that the rollout of new cloud technology will enable Indian airports to shift to common use passenger experiences where multiple airlines can leverage the same infrastructure, such as check in counters, self- service kiosks and boarding gates.

"The number of airports in India is expected to increase from 148 today to 220 by 2025. The new airports will bring closer together Indias almost 50 cities with populations exceeding one million people, creating substantial economic value in the long term. By connecting these cities better, air travel and transport will help unlock the full potential of India's economic growth too.

"Ensuring efficient and fluid operations and a seamless passenger experience at these airports will be critical to delivering on Indias air transport industry opportunity," Patel said.

Under the agreement, SITA will deploy its state-of-the-art solutions, including SITA Flex, Common Use Passenger Processing System (CUPPS), SITA Common Use Self Service (CUSS) and SITA Bag Manager. These IATA-certified platforms offer airlines and ground handlers the benefits of common use technologies, enabling scalable operations to meet their specific operational requirements.

"The baggage reconciliation system ensures a high level of baggage accountability, preventing losses and security concerns, which is critical to industry recovery amidst a spiralling baggage mishandling rate. This project represents a significant shift towards adopting cutting-edge technological platforms, enhancing operational efficiencies, and paving the way for the future adoption of biometric passenger processing.

"Additionally, real-time dashboard-based information will be made available to governing agencies, promoting transparency and informed decision-making," he said.

Patel informed that AAI officers at the airport and headquarters now have access to online real time dashboards, replacing the monthly service availability reports.

"The solution ensures they are better informed and know the availability of systems across all airports at every point in time, optimizing efficiency and promoting smooth operations," he said.

Geneva-based SITA delivers technology-based solutions for airlines, airports, aircraft and governments to ensure seamless, safe and sustainable air travel.

Twitter Refusing to Pay Google Cloud Bill Report Shows – Tekedia

A recent report by The Wall Street Journal has revealed that Twitter is in a dispute with Google over its cloud computing bill, which amounts to hundreds of millions of dollars per year. According to the report, Twitter is refusing to pay the full amount that Google is charging, claiming that the service is unreliable and overpriced.

The report cites anonymous sources familiar with the matter, who say that Twitter has been unhappy with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) since it migrated most of its infrastructure from Amazon Web Services (AWS) in 2018. The sources say that Twitter has experienced frequent outages, slow performance, and security issues on GCP, and that it believes Google is charging too much for the service.

Twitter is reportedly seeking to renegotiate its contract with Google, which expired in June 2023, or to switch back to AWS or another cloud provider. However, Google is not willing to lower its prices or offer any concessions and is threatening to take legal action if Twitter does not pay its bill. Just yesterday, Twitter users experienced a rate limit error while trying to navigate through the bird app, with Elon Musk tweeting about the glitch as mere systemic push on curtailing information scalping on the platform which many presume as a shift to make users subscribe on twitter blue subscription.

Sources told Bloomberg that Google had initially struggled to communicate with Musk to discuss the unpaid bills and had tried to reach him by contacting staff at SpaceX instead. Yaccarino, who became CEO of the company in early June, helped to restore the relationship and held talks with Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, a person familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. They said that Musk was supportive of the changed relationship.

The report also claims that Twitters decision to ban former President Donald Trump from its platform in January has added to the tension between the two companies, as Google was unhappy with Twitters handling of the situation and its impact on free speech.

The companies are also negotiating a broader partnership that could include Googles advertising spending on Twitter and its use of Twitters API, the person added. Twitter typically pays between $200 million and $300 million a year for Cloud services from Google, sources told Bloomberg.

Google did not immediately respond to Insiders request for comment, while Twitter replied with its standard automatic response, which did not address Insiders query. Since Musk bought Twitter in October, hes claimed that the social-media company had been on the path to bankruptcy and has drastically pulled back on spending. He chopped Twitters workforce in half the week after he took charge and has been incrementally laying off other staff ever since.

Neither Twitter nor Google has commented publicly on the report, but both companies have acknowledged that they have a partnership on cloud computing. In a statement to The Wall Street Journal, a Twitter spokesperson said: We have a multi-year partnership with Google Cloud and are happy with the relationship and the results weve seen. A Google spokesperson said: Were proud to work with Twitter and look forward to continuing our partnership.

Combination of cloud, private 5G will drive new enterprise solutions: Tata Communications Rajesh Awasthi – ETTelecom

Rajesh Awasthi, Vice President & Global Head of Managed Hosting and Cloud Services, Tata Communications. NEW DELHI: The combination of cloud with private 5G will drive new solutions catering to the bespoke requirements of enterprises in India which will expedite digital transformation, according to a senior executive of Mumbai-based diversified telecom company Tata Communications. ...the consumption of cloud infrastructure happens through the Internet. It would enable close working between the things which are being driven by IoT (Internet of Things), and things that are driven at a central site being merged into areas which would create new solutions, Rajesh Awasthi, Vice President & Global Head of Managed Hosting and Cloud Services, told ETTelecom.

continued below

The company is seeing heightened discussions among its customers about correlating data being generated by IoT devices across their operations for extracting actionable insights, Awasthi said, adding that data can be transmitted to the cloud at high-speeds and with low-latency by 5G.

Further, Tata Communications dedicated government cloud infrastructure hosts some of the critical government projects such as Ayushman Bharat Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), a procurement portal for the commerce ministry, among others.

The business unit has been growing at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of nearly 28% in the last three years. ...we are growing faster than the industry. The IT infrastructure and platform services in India are growing at a CAGR of around 22% to 23%. This is one of the growth engines for us, the executive said.

Asked about the slow pace of cloud adoption among Indias small and medium enterprises, Awasthi noted that SMEs prefer adopting cloud services through the software-as-a-service model to maintain their focus on the core business areas.

He also highlighted there is often a lack of talent or dedicated teams in SMEs to manage infrastructure or platform services. But we are enabling a framework which can be taken up by these MSME customers for their digital transformation.

On the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2022, Awasthi said that it will ensure that the citizens personal data remains secure and within the borders of India.

I think the data privacy bill is going to impact all lines of business in a positive sense because you are talking about critical data that needs to be protected in the right form, he said. Cyber threats are now becoming like virtual war plains for geopolitical scenarios. Having these controls are going to be very important.

The Cabinet on Wednesday (July 5) reportedly approved the draft of the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2022. The Bill, likely to be tabled in the Monsoon session of the Parliament, details citizens rights on personal data with provisions for entities handling personal data accountable for managing it with safety and security in a responsible manner.

He also said the company is gung-ho about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance its offerings, but has called for the right utilisation of the technology in India to get the most benefits out of it.
