Amazon has announced plans to pump another 10 billion ($10.7 billion) into Germany to support the expansion of its logistics network and cloud infrastructure across the country.
As part of the investment, AWS plans to make an 8.8 billion ($9.4 billion) investment by 2026 to continue to build, maintain, and operate its cloud infrastructure for the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) Region.
This, the company said, will help it meet growing customer demand for AWS services in Germany, including AI technologies.
AWS provides a range of cloud and AI services for companies across Germany, including its flagship Bedrock framework which allows users to harness a variety of in-house and third-party large language models (LLMs).
Meanwhile, the labs at the company's R&D in Berlin will be extended to develop and enhance AI and robotics technologies.
"Germany is at the heart of innovation across Europe. AWS is more committed than ever to helping German customers lead and build new technologies and services using the wide variety of capabilities in the AWS Cloud, including generative AI," said Stefan Hoechbauer, managing director for Germany and Europe at AWS.
"To address the growing demand for our services, were investing heavily in Germanys digital infrastructure. This also includes our commitment to support digital skills and talent development programmes across Germany and to partner with local communities on joint initiatives with a lasting impact."

The funding pledge means the company now has confirmed planned investments in Germany totaling 17.8 billion ($19 billion), and builds on a separate investment to expand cloud infrastructure across the country made just weeks ago.
In May, the tech giant unveiled a 7.8 billion ($8.3 billion) funding package for the AWS European Sovereign Cloud in Germany. The move marked the launch of AWS first sovereign cloud in the region, and will be housed in the state of Brandenburg.
AWS is one of several hyperscalers bolstering 'sovereign' cloud services in Europe to meet regulatory requirements on data residency and privacy.
The latest tranche of funding brings Amazons total investment in Germany to more than 77 billion ($82.5 billion) since 2010, and a total of more than 150 billion ($160.8 billion) across the EU.
The company said it will also be creating 4,000 new jobs in Germany this year, at three new fulfilment centers: one in Horn-Bad Meinberg in North Rhine-Westphalia, opening later this summer; one in Erfurt, Thuringia, which opened in May; and one in Groenkneten, which opened last August.
The new jobs will bring the company's total number of permanent employees in Germany up to more than 40,000. The company said its plans will contribute 15.4 billion ($16.5 billion) to Germanys GDP, while supporting an average of 15,200 full-time jobs annually in the local supply chain.
"Our teams work hand-in-hand with state-of-the-art technologies to deliver for small businesses and customers, while AWS enables organisations of all sizes in Germany to grow their businesses and innovate using the cloud," said Rocco Bruniger, Amazon Germany country manager.

The investment plan is expected to contribute 15.4 billion ($16.52bn) to Germanys GDP over this period, while supporting an average of 15,200 full-time jobs annually.

AWS launched its Frankfurt region back in 2014; it was the company's second European cloud region after Dublin.
This latest investment commitment short follows AWS' announcement of a European Sovereign Cloud hosted in Brandenburg Germany. The cloud giant is set to invest 7.8 billion ($8.47bn) in its sovereign cloud infrastructure in Germany through 2040, and brings the company's total cloud investment to $17.9bn.

AWS Custom Silicon Chips Range a Sign of What’s Coming to APAC Cloud Computing – TechRepublic
The surge in AI computing has resulted in delays to the supply of AI-capable chips, as demand has outstripped supply. Global giants Microsoft, Google and AWS are ramping up custom silicon production to reduce dependence on the dominant suppliers of GPUs, NVIDIA and AMD.
As a result, APAC enterprises may soon find themselves utilising an expanding array of chip types in cloud data centres. The chips they choose will depend on the compute power and speed required for different application workloads, cost and cloud vendor relationships.
Compute-intensive tasks like training an AI large language model require massive amounts of computing power. As demand for AI computing has risen, super advanced semiconductor chips from the likes of NVIDIA and AMD have become very expensive and difficult to secure.
The dominant hyperscale cloud vendors have responded by accelerating the production of custom silicon chips in 2023 and 2024. The programs will reduce dependence on dominant suppliers, so they can deliver AI compute services to customers globally, and in APAC.
Google debuted its first ever custom ARM-based CPUs with the release of the Axion processor during its Cloud Next conference in April 2024. Building on custom silicon work over the past decade, the step up to producing its own CPUs is designed to support a variety of general purpose computing, including CPU-based AI training.
For Googles cloud customers in APAC, the chip is expected to enhance Googles AI capabilities within its data center footprint, and will be available to Google Cloud customers later in 2024.
Microsoft, likewise, has unveiled its own first in-house custom accelerator optimised for AI and generative AI tasks, which it has badged the Azure Maia 100 AI Accelerator. This is joined by its own ARM-based CPU, the Cobalt 100, both of which were formally announced at Microsoft Ignite in November 2023. The firms custom silicon for AI has already been in use for tasks like running OpenAIs ChatGPT 3.5 large language model. The global tech giant said it was expecting a broader rollout into Azure cloud data centres for customers from 2024.
AWS investment in custom silicon chips dates back to 2009. The firm has now released four generations of Graviton CPU processors, which have been rolled out into data centres worldwide, including in APAC; the processors were designed to increase the price performance for cloud workloads. These have been joined by two generations of Inferentia for deep learning and AI inferencing, and two generations of Trainium for training 100B+ parameter AI models.
At a recent AWS Summit held in Australia, Dave Brown, vice president of AWS Compute & Networking Services, told TechRepublic the cloud providers reason for designing custom silicon was about providing customers choice and improving price performance of available compute.
Providing choice has been very important, Brown said. Our customers can find the processors and accelerators that are best for their workload. And with us producing our own custom silicon, we can give them more compute at a lower price, he added.
AWS has long-standing relationships with major suppliers of semiconductor chips. For example, AWS relationship with NVIDIA, the now-dominant player in AI, dates back 13 years, while Intel, which has released Gaudi accelerators for AI, has been a supplier of semiconductors since the cloud providers beginnings. AWS has been offering chips from AMD in data centres since 2018.
Brown said the cost optimisation fever that has gripped organisations over the last two years as the global economy has slowed has seen customers moving to AWS Graviton in every single region, including in APAC. He said the chips have been widely adopted by the market by more than 50,000 customers globally including all the hyperscalers top 100 customers. The largest institutions are moving to Graviton because of performance benefits and cost savings, he said.

The wide deployment of custom AWS silicon is seeing customers in APAC utilize these options.
Enterprise customers in APAC could benefit from an expanding range of compute options, whether that is measured by performance, cost or appropriateness to different cloud workloads. Custom silicon options could also help organisations meet sustainability goals.
The competition provided by cloud providers, in tandem with chip suppliers, could drive advances in chip performance, whether that is in the high-performance computing category for AI model training, or innovation for inferencing, where latency is a big consideration.
Cloud cost optimisation has been a major issue for enterprises, as expanding cloud workloads have led customers into ballooning costs. More hardware options give customers more options for reducing overall cloud costs, as they can more discerningly choose appropriate compute.
A growing range of custom silicon chips within cloud services will allow enterprises to better match their application workloads to the specific characteristics of the underlying hardware, ensuring they can use the most appropriate silicon for the use cases they are pursuing.
Sustainability is predicted to become a top five factor for customers procuring cloud vendors by 2028. Vendors are responding: for instance, AWS said carbon emissions can be slashed using Graviton4 chips, which are 60% more efficient. Custom silicon will help improve overall cloud sustainability.

Libby Cherry and Lizzy Burden(Bloomberg) --The Bank of England wants additional powers to police the finance industrys switch to cloud computing, saying its cloaking systems in secrecy and concentrating sensitive data with a handful of technology giants like Amazon.com Inc. and Microsoft Corp.
The central bank said it needs additional policy measures to make sure it can assess the industrys IT infrastructure even when its run by third parties. Frankly, well have to roll some of that back, that secrecy that goes with it. Its not consistent with our objectives, Governor Andrew Bailey told reporters Tuesday.
Firms including Deutsche Bank AG are movingtheir most sensitive IT systemsinto the cloud, allowing them to spend less on their own data centers while relying on the security and computing power of tech firms. The largest providers include AmazonWebServices, Microsoft Azure and Alphabet Inc.s Google Cloud.
What we now have moving are things that are much more integral to the running of banks and those core systems, which could go to safety and soundness, Sam Woods, chief executive officer of the Prudential Regulation Authority, told reporters.
The BOE said it is working with the U.K. Treasury and the Financial Conduct Authority on how to tackle these risks. Regulators around the world are weighing how to police the systemic risks across finance and technology.

New AWS CEO Matt Garman: Everything You Need to Know – Technology Magazine
Effective from this week (3rd June 2024), Matt Garman is the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Amazon Web Services (AWS).
He takes the reins as the third CEO of the world-leading cloud computing company from Adam Selipsky, who recently announced his resignation. Matt was the first product manager of AWS and helped to build and launch numerous core services for the company.
As new CEO, Matt's vision will be instrumental in helping the company to progress even further in the global cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) race. He listens to customers and is eager to highlight that security will always be the companys number one priority.
Having first started at Amazon in 2005, Matt has amassed more than 20 years of experience within the company building his knowledge and a strong customer base. Having worked as an MBA intern, he joined the company full-time in 2006 as one of the first product managers at AWS.
Back then, the worldwide sales team at AWS consisted of just three people.
With this comprehensive experience, Matt spent his time creating the companys first service-level agreements, defining new features and creating new pricing plans.
He then became the first product manager for EC2, Amazons Elastic Compute Cloud, leading product management in the early years of the product. Eventually, Matt became the general manager of all AWS Compute services in 2016, before moving to lead WW Sales, Marketing, Support and Professional Services in 2020.
With such a broad range of experiences at AWS, Matt holds such a unique range of abilities and has an incredible understanding of the companys customers and business. He will be able to harness his product leadership and problem-solving skills to define the next era at AWS, something which Amazon President and CEO Andy Jassy is excited by.

The cloud will become a cornerstone of enterprise operations as IDC estimates that by 2025, there will be over 750 million cloud-native applications globally. Additionally, over 90% of organizations anticipate employing a multi-cloud approach over the next few years. Considering the cloud offers unparalleled flexibility, scalability, and agility, these numbers should be unsurprising.
However, the swift adoption of cloud infrastructure has also introduced expanded enterprise attacks, the rate at which is often outpacing security precautions. According to the Unit 42 Incident Response Report, cloud-related incidents have surged from 6% in 2021 to 16.6% in 2023, a trend that is likely to continue. As organizations migrate to the cloud, its clear the gap between traditional SOC capabilities and cloud security requirements widens, leaving critical assets vulnerable to cyber threats and presenting a new set of security challenges that traditional Security Operations Center (SOC) tools are ill-equipped to handle. But why are they falling short? And what can we do to protect our operations from threats?
Legacy SOC tools were not designed for the modern world. They were designed for on-premises environments and often lacked the native capabilities to help analysts detect and respond to cloud-specific threats. For instance, most conventional tools provide limited visibility into cloud infrastructure, leading to unmanaged and exposed sensitive data. Our recent Cloud Threat Report revealed that 63% of publicly exposed storage buckets contained personally identifiable information (PII), things like financial records and intellectual property. Furthermore, attackers have become more efficient, with the median time from compromise to data exfiltration dropping to just two days in 2023, down from nine days in 2021. In nearly half of these cases, data exfiltration occurred within a day of compromise.
Securing cloud environments is complicated and can seem daunting. It requires constant coordination across multiple teams, including CloudOps, DevOps, and SecOps. Each team has distinct responsibilities and tools, leading to fragmented security efforts that can leave gaps. Our 2024 State of Cloud Native Security Report indicates that the average organization uses over 30 security tools, with 6 to 10 dedicated to cloud security alone. This siloed approach hampers the ability to respond to threats in real-time and manage security holistically. Moreover, companies know this siloed approach needs addressing, with 80% of respondents expressing a desire for a centralized security solution, further underscoring the need for integrated and comprehensive security strategies.
As cloud threats evolve, businesses must recognize the limitations of traditional SOC tools and the necessity for a modern security operations platform. To effectively address these challenges, organizations need solutions that provide comprehensive visibility, control, and real-time threat response capabilities.
A modern security platform should only be deemed modern if it is driven by principles addressing cloud threats dynamic and evolving nature. This involves real-time detection and response capabilities that can keep pace with the fast-moving threat landscape. The first step is to prioritize the data being collected by myriad devices, workflows and technologies within the healthcare organization. Many hospitals continue to rely on legacy solutions and devices that are actively compiling information. Theres often real value in that data, but solutions that are a decade old or more arent equipped to run machine learning algorithms on that information. Therefore, hospitals should focus on the data that is most important to their clinical operations, find the machines that are producing that data and extract the information.
The second step is to determine where that data needs to go. Some information may require only incremental analysis that can be handled easily at the edge of the network, while deeper algorithmic analysis may entail transferal to a private or public cloud. Perhaps the workload requires a combination of edge and central processing.
Whatever the case, workloads can be shifted appropriately to maximize the use of all computing resources. This will minimize bandwidth and storage bottlenecks and strike a good balance between optimal workload performance and lower costs.
As hospital systems continue to onboard AI and real-time analytics, they will need a flexible infrastructure that supports the demands of each of these solutions without breaking their budgets. Adopting a hybrid edge-to-cloud approach and optimizing resources appropriately will allow them to effectively leverage these technologies, overcome many of their current challenges, and help clinicians provide exceptional patient care.
AWS, SAP Partner to Offer AI Cloud Tools to Power Business Applications – AI Business
AWS and SAP are jointly offering cloud-based solutions to help businesses accelerate generative AI adoption using their own custom data.
As part of a newly expanded partnership, Amazons generative AI platform Bedrock will be made available through SAPs AI Core infrastructure service.
Businesses using SAPs solutions can access a variety of large language models including Anthropics Claude 3 to power their AI applications.
AWS was the first cloud provider certified to support the SAP portfolio and today, thousands of enterprise companies run SAP solutions on AWS to get the most out of their mission-critical applications, said Matt Garman, AWS incoming CEO. Now, AWS and SAP are making it faster and easier for companies to apply generative AI to their core business data to become more efficient, responsive and sustainable.
Under the deal SAP will use AWS Graviton4 chips to power workloads on its HANA Cloud service. SAP already uses AWS Graviton3 chips. The company claims the hardware offers 30% improvements running analytical workloads.
SAP will also use AWS purpose-built AI hardware for running AI and machine learning workloads, including the Trainium and Inferentia chips.
SAP says its engineers were able to train and fine-tune unspecified large language models in two days using AWS AI chips on what would have taken 23 days using Amazons EC2 instances.

Businesses can also access a series of embedded use cases on RISE, SAPs cloud suite of AI tools on AWS.
Amazons satellite broadband network, Project Kuiper, will use RISE to support supply chain and manufacturing processes.
Partnerships like this collaboration with AWS are critical as we embed generative AI solutions across our enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications so that customers can drive innovation at an accelerated pace, said Christian Klein, SAPs CEO.
