Dumfries Musical Theatre Company set to perform Chess musical – at last – Daily Record

Dumfries Musical Theatre Company is taking on its biggest challenge yet.

After being postponed for three years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the DMTCs stars are to bring one of musical lyricist Sir Tim Rices greatest works, Chess, to the Theatre Royal in Dumfries from May 13 to 20.

Director Stewart Cameron told the Standard: Chess is a challenging show for all concerned as it is a sung-through piece.

However everyone is rising to this challenge and we are in the midst of putting together a wonderful production which everyone needs to come and see.

With music by ABBA songwriters Benny Andersson and Bjrn Ulvaeus, the highly-acclaimed musical is set around a chess tournament between two grandmasters one American, the other a Soviet.

Between them, apart from a chess board, is a woman who manages one of the men and who falls in love with the other.

From Tyrol to Thailand the players, lovers, politicians, CIA and KGB make their moves to the pulse of this monumental rock score, including international hits such as One Night in Bangkok and I Know Him So Well.

Caitlin Wallace, one of the publicity team, said it promises to be a night to remember for local theatre-goers: DMTCs performance begins as American grandmaster chess player Freddie Trumper, the current world champion, arrives in Merano for the Chess World Championships.

When put to the test by Russian grandmaster Anatoly Sergievsky, it is more than just chess and pride on the line, as a love triangle develops between the pair and Trumpers second, Florence.

Liz McGuiness is assisting with direction and the production team includes Christopher Watt as the musical director with Amy McCreadie leading the choreography.

Chess will feature an experienced and talented cast with Jason Reekie playing the Russian chess grandmaster Anatoly Sergievsky, Ruairi McCormack as US grandmaster Frederick Trumper, DMTC newcomer Eve Daniell as The Arbiter and Ren Fourteath as Florence Vassy.

Ren, known as Dumfries Singing Midwife, said: This is a part Ive been waiting 30 years to play, ever since listening to the soundtrack cassette in my parents car on long journeys from about 1988 onwards. Ive always loved the part of Florence.

Chess is my favourite show and Ive performed songs from it at concerts for decades, so the chance to sing those wonderful duets with actors and vocalists like Jason, Katy and Ruairi is amazing. A dream come true.

The performances are at 7.30pm, with a matinee only on Sunday, May 14, at 2.30pm.

Adult tickets are 15 with a reduced price of 13 on Saturday and Monday, May 13 and 15.

For students and under-18s it is 13 for each performance.

Tickets are available online from http://www.ticketsource.co.uk/brigend-theatre as well as the Theatre Royal Dumfries Box Office and Midsteeple Box Office.

"Im 14 and Ive been playing chess for five to six years. I practice online, on Chess.com, mostly by myself. Though I dont take part in my local chess community much, I really like the competitiveness of chess. This isnt my first tournament. I played my first tournament in 2016 and was in the K-3 section. I came in close to last place out of maybe 30 people. I cried a lot. But a month later, at my next tournament, I did a lot better after studying more. I was still playing in the K-3 section, but I tied for second. I recently played in the eighth-grade section at the K-12 Grades National. I scored 5 out of 7, one point behind the winner. I was really happy about that." - Ishnoor Singh Chandi

Lung should know freeing Taiwan from being US chess piece is only … – Global Times

US, Taiwan Illustration: Xia Qing/GT

Lung, who is now in her 70s, cited stories and remarks from several friends or neighbors, expressing "concern" about the fragmentation of the society of the Taiwan island. In reality, these accounts are mostly about portraying the so-called "military threat from the Chinese mainland," while also inadvertently revealing some dubious value convictions. Lung's initial stance is clearly one of opposition to the Chinese mainland. She doesn't show any dissatisfaction with reported US' "scorched earth" strategy or "plan to destroy Taiwan."

Who is responsible for the division within Taiwan? There is no doubt that Lung's interpretation is in line with US' taste. However, it is clear that the internal opposition and division within the Taiwan island is caused by the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces and external powers. Now, some people represented by Lung want to blame everything on the Chinese mainland's policy toward Taiwan.

The US has been escalating the Taiwan question step by step, while the Democratic Progressive Party has been maintaining its power by creating panic to secure votes, which is causing anxiety within Taiwan. There is no doubt that Lung is fueling and selling this anxiety, creating disharmony between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan. This is manipulation and misinformation of public sentiment, not only hijacking the will of the people in Taiwan but also kidnapping the optimistic prospect of peaceful reunification.

L Xiang, a research fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, noted that from her articles, one can sense she is confused between right and wrong in the current world changes. As the offspring of the Chinese nation, a resident of the Taiwan island, and a celebrity, instead of fighting against the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, she has created a sad and depressing mood that has a great impact on young people in Taiwan. This will make young people lose their direction and fall into a pessimistic and confused state regarding the future.

"But in fact, if Taiwan compatriots can think clearly, they should respond to influential figures like Ma Ying-jeou, promote peaceful reunification across the Taiwan Straits. As long as the people in Taiwan move forward in the direction of the 1992 Consensus, peaceful reunification will be achieved within a foreseeable period of time, and this is in the best interests of both sides. Unfortunately, I cannot see this rationality from Lung's article, which is very sad," L said.

As a writer with a certain influence in Taiwan, Lung has no self-reflection and even wants to highlight her "wisdom and intelligence" on this occasion. She claims strength should be only a part of Taiwan's strategy, and politicians and other public figures even should show true courage by reaching out to China the Chinese mainland to somehow de-escalate. The real purpose of Lung's claims is not to pursue a good atmosphere between the two sides, but to try to confuse and delay peaceful reunification across the Straits.

The group of people, represented by Lung, are extremely contradictory in their hearts. They are afraid of force, but they are unwilling to promote peace. They even position themselves as "outsiders." Perhaps Lung really sees herself as an outsider, because concerns in her eyes are that the so-called division and mistrust on the island have "played right into the hands of the Chinese mainland," rather than the real concerns and worries about the people in Taiwan and the future of Taiwan.

This deliberate rendering of panic can lead to a lack of objective understanding of the external situation among the people in Taiwan, causing them to blindly follow the wrong path and be hijacked by the stubborn "Taiwan independence" separatist forces represented by Tsai Ing-wen. That is what the US is happy to see.

For the US, Taiwan is a chess piece, a consumable. It is not an object that the US truly cherishes, loves and firmly defends. Some people on the island still blindly believe in US' promises. This erroneous judgment leads them to think of themselves as an object that needs protection rather than a chess piece that can be used at any time.

As a public figure, Lung should lead the people in Taiwan to a correct understanding of the situation across the Taiwan Straits. As long as there are people in Taiwan who can distinguish right from wrong, they will not be willing to be a chess piece, but instead hope to guard a peaceful and safe society and achieve a vision of peaceful reunification.

Chesham: Fly-tipping near River Chess causes concern – Bucks Free Press

A resident took to the social media platform Twitter after spotting three men in hi-viz working on the side of BP Londis garage in Chesham on Sunday April 16.

The men appeared to be throwing building waste into the waterway as they put up a new fence on the edge of the garage on Amersham Road.

The Tweet by the concerned resident sparked hundreds of comments and reactions, including a retweet by the The Understones lead singer Feargal Sharkey.

Although not part of River Chess, the watercress bed is closely linked to the precious chalk stream habitat.

River Chess Associations chair Paul Jennings said: Its not actually the river, but they are connected and water will drain into the river, so if theres anything toxic being thrown in it will end up in the river.

There was a while back a load of litter being dropped onto the footpath behind the site so they dont have a very good track record.

He told anyone treating River Chess as a tip to treat all water courses with respect.

If you dump into a river it flows away from where you are and its no longer a problem for your it is for someone else, he added.

The waterway next to the garage was once used to farm watercress, a major industry in Chesham in the Victorian times supplying London via the Metropolitan Railway.

Buckinghamshire Councils deputy leader and cabinet member for climate and environment Gareth Williams commented the fly-tipping: Buckinghamshire Council is investigating this incident and has consulted the Environment Agency as a courtesy, as part of our usual procedures for this type of incident.

"Consideration will need to be given as to whether offences have been committed under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.Potential environmental impacts will be assessed during this process. We will fully investigate and examine the evidence available to determine what action can be taken against any offender.

Mr Jennings was at River Chess conducting a fish survey when he spoke to Bucks Free Press, saying the samples were turning up quite positive thanks to good flow recently.

In early February, River Chess Association volunteers spotted unusual foam discharge in River Chess beyond the Chesham Sewage Treatment Works.

The pollution scare prompted an investigation by Thames Water to trace the source, including speaking with local businesses to try to identify the substance.

Mr Jennings feared at the time the chemical was a result of fly-tipping by an unlicenced trader.

He said: It wasnt toxic and certainly from all the surveys we did it wasnt anything detrimental. The view was it shouldnt be in the river and it hasnt gone through the process but it is concerning. It brings to mind that the sewage works cant treat everything.

BP, Londis and the Environment Agency were contacted for a comment.

Why Anish Giri Is The Most Incredible Player Among All Chess … – Chess.com

Edited April 3, 2023: Happy April Fools Day, everyone. Stay safe!

Hello, chess world. This is the first of a 25-article series proving why GM Anish Giri is the best person in the history of all humanity. I am writing this article series not because master Anish is now my CEO and ultimate boss but because I truly believe in the words I am writing.

In this first article, we shall explore Giri's incredibleness levels, which are off the charts. Let us begin.

Let's start with a scientific analysis of his name. To a non-specialist's eyes, Anish Giri might seem like a regular name. However, our star's moniker hides a secret message that describes the type of person he is.

AmazingNobleIncredibleSavantHonorable

GoodImpressiveRegular guy? No way.Incredible again

Not many people can pull off such a name. Nay, just one canand his name is CEO Anish Giri.

The golden ratio is a magical mathematical concept that turns regular things into perfect masterpieces. For this reason, it's also called the "divine proportion."

Not a lot of people know this, but the golden ratio is based on Anish Giri. Let me show you:

What do William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Franz Kafka, and others like them have in common? None of them could write well enough to express their thoughts in 280 characters. That's why they all had to write booksand also the reason why they never had a meaningful following on Twitter.

GM and CEO Anish Giri, on the other hand, is a Twitter whisperer. He makes that bird sing. That's why he has so many followers, and that's why you should follow him too. Click the button below to go to his Twitter profile. And do notice how he's the only super grandmaster in the world with a personalized Twitter button. That's how incredible he is.

Don't have a Twitter account? You should create one and follow him. Do it while it's still free (who knows what they're doing next).

In conclusion, CEO Anish is an incredible person. And OMG, I hope he doesn't read this far. Please help us. Someone call Erik and tell him to come back.
