For 36 years, Vishwanathan Anand was number 1 in India. Then Gukesh happened – IndiaTimes

The 17-year-old Grandmaster has risen to the top of Indias chess pack and a Candidates berth to challenge the best in the world looks within reach. The jury for TOIs #Unstoppable21 campaign has picked the Chennai teenager as one of the Unstoppable 21 Indians under 21 yearsHighs and lows are part and parcel of a sportspersons life and it invariably boils down to how one deals with them.Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh, the prodigy who has taken the chess world by storm and surpassed the legendary Viswanathan Anand as Indias No. 1 in the live FIDE rankings, experienced them all in the last 12 months, en route to scripting history. He followed it up with a creditable quarterfinal finish in the recently-concluded World Cup in Baku where R Praggnanandhaa won the silver. Gukesh, though, looks all set to join Prag in the elite eight-player Candidates event next April, the winner of which will take on the current world champion Ding Liren.Gukesh has been a force in recent times, but he shot to limelight at the Chess Olympiad in Mamallapuram last year. The teenage sensation clinched the individual gold with an unbelievable 9 out of 11 points in a field which comprised the likes of Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana, among others. Representing the India 2 team that had bagged bronze, the 17-year-old had an unstoppable streak eight wins on the bounce. After becoming Indias poster boy at a tournament where he had delivered a number of breathtaking performances, Gukesh went through a rough patch, by his lofty standards, in the months that followed. All of us go through a phase where we do not know what we are doing. It was the same for him, Gukeshs coach, GM Vishnu Prasanna, told TOI.

Fedor Holz Has Sights on Daniel Negreanu in Boxing and Chess Matches – PokerTube

In a recent Ask Me Anything (AMA) on Reddit, Fedor Holz revealed that he sees Daniel Negreanu as a worthy foe in the boxing ring, as well as in a mano a mano duel over a chess board.

The German wunderkind answered a dozen questions from fans on AMA, one of which was to name a poker pro that he would like to challenge in a boxing-chess match. Holz placed DNegs on the top of his list - not as a means of revenge or to settle any old scores - but to engage in a somewhat balanced and competitive battle.

To those of us who have lost our poker bankroll and have had to start over from scratch, it's reassuring to know that top pros such as Fedor were in the same boat at one time as well. Listen to Holz describe his experiences with going busto - and a whole lot more in the video below:

Apple playing chess, while others play checkers in march to $3 trillion – AppleInsider

Analysts at investment firm Wedbush say Apple has fought back "against all odds" to once again be on the cusp of a $3 trillion market valuation -- and $4 trillion is in sight.

Apple was the first company to ever reach $3 trillion. It did so in January 2022. Over the following 12 months, its valuation dropped to under $2 trillion.

It is about to hit that mark again. Potentially, it may do so today, June 28.

"We note that Apple... then ultimately navigated a myriad [sic] of China supply chain challenges along with a softer macro over the last 18 months in Rock of Gibraltar fashion," writes Wedbush in a note seen by AppleInsider. "[Thus] Cook and Cupertino find themselves back against all odds (from the bear view) on the doorstep of the $3 trillion market cap threshold this week."

Wedbush maintains that it has correctly analysed Apple's fortunes -- in June 2023 it raised its stock target to $220 -- and that "the Street has severely underestimated the massive installed base upgrade opportunity around iPhone 14."

"Apple [is] playing chess while others play checkers," continue the analysts. "In FY24 the Cupertino stalwart is on pace to approach $100 billion of annual services revenue growing double digits which is a jaw dropping trajectory vs. the roughly $50 billion+ of services revenue that Apple was delivering only in FY20."

"We believe Apple's fair valuation could be in the $3.5 trillion range," says Wedbush, "with a bull case $4 trillion valuation by FY25."

Part of the reason for Wedbush's growth prediction is a belief that the App Store for the new Apple Vision Pro is "another expansion of the App Store moat down the road." The company also believes that Apple now has a "mini super cycle iPhone 15 ahead with roughly 25% of Apple's golden customer base not upgrading their iPhones in over 4 years."

The forthcoming iPhone 15 range is also just part of a raft of products Apple is expected to release by the end of 2024.

At time of writing, Apple's stock market valuation is at $2.95 trillion.

10-year-old becomes first PH female chess National Master – The Manila Times

(UPDATE) FOR the first time in Philippine chess history, the title of National Master was given to a female player.

Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales, chief executive officer of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, confirmed in a social media post on Saturday that the NCFP has bestowed the title of National Master on 10-year-old Nika Juris Nicolas of Pasig City.

The title is usually conferred on male players who compete in open tournaments dominated by males.

Its female counterpart, the Woman National Master title, is given to female chess players who dominate the distaff side of the competition.

Nicolas, however, competes in the boys and open divisions and, more often than not, prevails.

She was the only female who competed in the under-11 boys division when she topped the national eliminations for the 2023 NCFP National Youth and Schools Chess Championships held in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental from March 24 to 27.

At the grand finals of the same event for boys held in Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte from June 2 to 9, Nicolas was the only player in her division to win medals in all three events: a silver in standard chess, a silver in blitz and a bronze in rapid.

Because of her success in the tournaments and her breaking the gender barrier, the NCFP awarded her the title of National Master.

Traditionally, the chess titles conferred to men are higher in value than those given to women. In fact, the world chess federation requires higher FIDE rating thresholds compared to their female equivalents when awarding chess titles such as Grandmaster, International Master, FIDE Master and Candidate Master.

Nicolas is seen as the brightest future of Philippine chess.

She is set to compete in Asean Age-Group Chess Championships in Bangkok, Thailand slated from June 17 to 27, 2023, where she also aims for the Woman FIDE Master title.

She is set to play in the 1st Professional Chess Association of the Philippines National Interschool Championship slated next month. She will play for the VCIS-Homeschool Global Chess Team along with National Master Antonella Berthe Racasa, Gabriel Ryan Paradero, Andrew Toledo and Aron Toledo. Team coach is Robert Racasa.

Her parents, Nikki and Krisanto, are proud of the achievements of their daughter and thrilled about what she can accomplish in the future.

"Such a feat is not without pain, losses and sacrifices," said Nikki.

"Baby Nika would only have a day of rest before she had to fly to another tournament for the past month. More than that, she suffered many losses along the way. Undeterred by all these challenges, she courageously played in Dapitan City and performed well."
