CHS chess team gets second at Cherryvale | News | chanute.com – Chanute Tribune
CHERRYVALE The Chanute High School chess team finished second at a tournament in Cherryvale on Saturday, with the Blue Comets securing 17 out of 24 possible points. Frontenac earned first place at the tournament.
We may have lost this battle, but the war is already decisive. We are a force to be reckoned with; we are unstoppable, said chess player Eric Erbe.
Erbe received fourth place while fifth place went to Zerek Haight. Jacob Hurtado earned seventh place while Brayden Baker finished in eighth. Twelfth place went to Nathan Studebaker, 13th to Josept Lazobarahona and Madisyn Lopez earned 18th.
To say I am proud of these kids is an understatement, said head coach Kyle Gregg. They fought hard all the way to the bitter end. We faced some really tough opponents and in the end we just couldnt pull off the first place victory. Frontenac seems to be our unofficial rival this season and we have been neck and neck all season.
Gregg said the team was missing a few players but the team as a whole played well.
I dont harp on the losses too much because I know that without them we cant grow as a team. We wont let this one bother us too much, but we will use it to fuel the hunger for our next one, he said.
The Blue Comet chess team will play at home Nov. 18.
And we will be spending our time until then making sure that we are at 100% of our ability, Gregg said.

Fairborn: Investigation clears candidate of federal COVID relief fund … – Dayton Daily News
An investigation into Fairborn awarding federal COVID relief money to a local business owner running for city council this fall has the found candidate was compliant to apply and receive the funds.
Sylvia Chess was compliant with the application and use requirements of the city and of American Rescue Plan Act guidelines, Fairborn Solicitor Mike McNamee said in a legal opinion released Friday afternoon.
The investigation stemmed from a claim last month by the Citizens for Fairborns Future. It alleged that Chess, owner of Xtra Pro-Dev 101 Centre, LLC, received $10,000 in ARPA funding for a small business grant for which the company was not qualified.
Chess said she knew all along that there was no fraud. Its just that I had to wait until the investigation was over. But it did, in fact, hurt my campaign because I didnt want to make a lot of noise until they finished the investigation.
McNamees opinion said the Fairborn group claimed the business did not qualify because Chess was not operating out of a commercial location as of Jan. 1, 2020, as required by the city.
The filing date of articles of organization for Xtra Pro-Dev 101 Centre, LLC, listing Chess as the agent, was July 1, 2020, Ohio Secretary of State documents show.
Ms. Chess had previously operated her business in Texas before relocating to Fairborn, McNamees report states. Ms. Chess sought to continue operating the business.
The operational requirement of Jan. 1, 2020, is explicitly devoid of a location requirement, thus Texas would suffice, according to the report.
Chess started her due diligence for a Fairborn site in December 2019, as shown in a letter from her realtor, McNamee wrote.
A storefront or brick and mortar operation is not required for a business to be operating, nor does a business filing need to be submitted to the Ohio Secretary of State, according to the opinion. Thus, the allegation that Ms. Chess failure to register her business until July of 2020 is without merit.
Chess is one of five candidates running for Fairborn City Council this fall, with three seats open. The other candidates are incumbents Clint Allen and Tana Stanton, plus challengers James Baker and Katy Carlton.
Chess said voters deserve to know the truth about anybody no matter who they are.
People need to make sure that whatever you do, its the truth and you know that its the truth. And if its not it should not be published, she said
Im hoping that I win this election, Chess added. If not, Im going to continue to serve the city I m going to continue to work hard for our small businesses in Fairborn. Im going to continue to do everything I was doing even before I thought about running for election.
Im not mad at anybody. Im not upset, she said. I think people need to be careful what type of information they feed to the public, especially when it comes down to a grassroots election, a local election like this This is an important election. We do need people in office that are adamant about working as a team of professionals in order to move our town forward.
The city revealed Oct. 20 it had an ongoing investigation following questions by this news organization. The questions were raised after it obtained Fairborn ARPA funding documents through a public records request.
The documents involved ARPA funds given to a business operated by Chess.
The city, like some others, is using federal money to help Fairborn small businesses recover from the pandemic. The city received about $6.8 million in ARPA money, $250,000 of which was designated for small business grants, Fairborn records show.
Fairborn last year awarded $10,000 each the maximum amount to six small businesses, Dayton Daily News records show.
The city told Chess on Feb. 7, 2023 her company at 440 W. Main St. would be receiving a $10,000 small business grant during the second round of awards, Fairborn emails show.

Grand expectations for the FIDE Grand Swiss on the Isle of Man – ChessBase
By Alex Colovic
The strongest Swiss event of the year is around the corner. On the scenic Isle of Man, the first round starts on 25 October, and in the next twelve days we will witness a magnificent chess spectacle full of fierce battles. The Grand Swiss is a pivotal part of the FIDE World Championship cycle. Its democratic nature attracts players from all over the world, giving them a chance to qualify for the Candidates Tournament.
Two coveted spots in the open event and two in the womens tournament lead to Toronto, where next spring the FIDE Candidates Tournament and the FIDE Womens Candidates Tournament will take place. This is a chance to write ones name in chess history, a chance that in the past was available only to a selected few.

114 players will participate in the open section (see full list).
The list of favourites includes Fabiano Caruana, who has already qualified for Toronto from the World Cup in Baku; Hikaru Nakamura, who will seek a return to the Candidates that went so well for him (except for the last round) last year in Madrid; Alireza Firouzja, the winner of the previous Grand Swiss in Riga; Anish Giri, who desperately wants another shot at the title after his last Candidates appearance in 2020/21 in Yekaterinburg; Gukesh D, who at 17 entered the top 10 and became Indias number one after 37 years of Anands domination. These are only the top five on the starting list, but you should check the full list and pick your own favourites!
The Grand Swiss is also a part of the FIDE Circuit, and it adds another twist to the tournament intrigue. The winner of the FIDE Circuit will qualify for the Candidates Tournament, and there is an intense battle underway for the top spot. The current leader of the Circuit, Fabiano Caruana, has already qualified, so second placed Gukesh D and third placed Anish Giri, the two players who have a reasonable chance of winning it, will try to do their best in this event.

Hou Yifan Out For Revenge Against Lagno In 2023 Julius Baer … – Chess.com
Chess.coms top event for women, the $70,000 Julius Baer Womens Speed Chess Championship, is back next month and this time with a big-name sponsor and six of the strongest players on the planet.
Defending champion GM Kateryna Lagno and the near-legendary GM Hou Yifan, the world number-one for eight years and last years runner-up, have confirmed they will resume their speed chess rivalry.
Both will battle it out in the main event from November 13 to 22, which is supported by the Swiss private bank Julius Baer.
The stellar lineup also includes the highly-decorated GMs Alexandra Kosteniuk and Valentina Gunina. Kosteniuk and Gunina are two of the finest and fastest women players, and both former champions.
Indias GM Harika Dronavalli, the runner up to Hou in 2021, will also return alongside fellow countrywoman IM Vaishali Rameshbabu, the fast-rising 22-year-old from Chennai and sister of the prodigy GM Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu.
Here's what happened in last year's dramatic final:
Two more spots are available from what promises to be an exciting qualification event, open to all titled women, from November 8 to 9. This year, however, the format for the first stage is slightly different.
The Julius Baer Womens Speed Chess Championship is being brought into line with the Speed Chess Championship and the Junior Speed Chess Championship which means the qualifier will see a 14-round Swiss on day one followed by a top-8 double elimination bracket on the second day.
The winner of each bracket on day two will advance from the qualifier to the main event. Play will begin at 9 a.m. ET / 15:00 CEST / 18:30 IST on both days.
The main event starting November 13 will see an eight-player single elimination bracket, with seedings determined by a Chess.com panel. The six players listed above have been directly invited, and will be joined by the two qualifiers.
All matches will be played over 5+1, 3+1 and 1+1 time controls. The exact schedule will be confirmed later.
Antje Hembd, Head Global Sponsoring & Partnership Julius Baer, said: We are thrilled to support the Womens Speed Chess Championship for the first time and to help to empower women and create a more equitable, diverse and exciting chess landscape.
"This year Julius Baer has been included in the Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index (GE). This inclusion shows our commitment to advance to the topic and to share our results transparently supporting our Diversity & Inclusion vision to foster an inclusive environment built on care.
This years Julius Baer Womens Speed Chess Championship is the fifth edition of the event, which has seen a series of thrilling finals since it first burst onto the scene four years ago.
GM Elina Danielian, who reached the main event as a qualifier, won the inaugural WSCC in 2019 defeating Gunina 15-13 in the final. Danielian was dethroned in 2020 by GM Anna Ushenina, who beat Kosteniuk in the final. Hou then took the title in 2021, toppling Dronavalli, before Lagno won it against Hou in 2022.
You can watch the live broadcast on Chess.com/TV or on our YouTube and Twitch channels. Find out more about the 2023 Julius Baer Women's Speed Chess Championship in our event guide here.

Chronically online fans love this remix of a 2001 Harry Potter scene – In The Know
A scene from the first Harry Potter movie has lived multiple lives on the internet. The infamous chess scene from the 2001 film has birthed a number of memes mostly due to the young actors overperforming lines about chess moves and has now inspired a remix that TikTok users are hoping theyll hear in the club.
A creator named Lizzie used the relatively new European-based social media platform Frever to create animated avatars of pop culture references dancing to TikTok sounds and songs. Lizzie also uploaded the content to TikTok, where the creator has over 600,000 followers, and sparked a movement by re-creating the pivotal scene.
Using the chess scene audio that was uploaded to TikTok by Peacock, Lizzies Frever video shows an animated Harry, Ron and Hermione dancing while lip-synching to the serious dialogue. The contrast struck a chord with viewers and has been viewed over 4.4 million times.
The scene and response inspired Australian producer Leo Zarucky, who added a beat to the dialogue to match the avatars dancing. His remix has been viewed over 2.6 million times.
The sentiment among commenters was unanimous: This was an incredible song that needed a full-length version to play in clubs.
I swear if this came on in the club, I would lose it, one commenter wrote.
Lmao as someone who is chronically online Id go feral if I heard this at a club, another agreed.
The remix took the meme full circle, with TikTok users re-creating the remixed version of the Frever video in live action. Zarucky said in another video that he loved how creative the responses have been to his silly lil track.
Pop singer Tove Lo even joined the trend, with one top comment reading, one of us one of us.
The Harry Potter TikTok community may have even gotten its wish, as one user shared a video showing the remix playing at a club in New York City.
The impact of Harry Potter has spanned 26 years, but the movies in particular have been a go-to source for memes, reaction videos and slang. To Neville Longbottom, is to glow up after puberty, like the actor Matthew Lewis who played the character did. People dub others a Hermione if they behave in an enthusiastic, academic way. Something as seemingly innocuous as the way actor Michael Gambon, as Dumbledore, read the line Harry, did you put your name in the goblet of fire? inspired memes and jokes.
There was Potter Puppet Pals and A Very Potter Musical both spin-offs of the movies and books but still producing memes of their own. Even fan reactions to big news, like HBOs Harry Potter reboot announcement, were in the form of memes.
The Harry Potter universe is intrinsically tied to a lot of internet culture perhaps because millennials were reading it at the same time as social media was up-and-coming. Its unusual that one source of content still inspires so many memes and feels relevant decades after its debut. So much so that some fans admit to conflating parodies with real scenes.
I cant tell the difference between the real audio and the parody anymore, one fan commented on the original video.
Ive almost completely replaced the hes going to sacrifice himself bit with the meme version in my memory tbh, another agreed. I was actually a little thrown off that it sounded so normal.

Scenes From a Chess Championship in Bushwick – bushwickdaily.com
With local interest in chess on the rise, chess clubs seem to be sprouting up at a previously unheard of rate in New York. These said clubs are filling to capacity, from the more party-oriented Club Chess scene to local staples now seeing all-time high tournament attendance. In an attempt to harmonize and gather chess lovers from every neighborhood, Bushwick Chess recently hosted its first annual NYC Chess Club Olympiad last month to put to test the best players from eight different clubs around the city.
Sixty-four players, like the sixty-four squares on a chess board, took their seats at Bushwicks own BrookLAN, a local gaming fixture, to a massive seven-person round robin style format, seeing teams facing a new challenging club every round. Newcomer clubs to the chess club scene like Queers Gambit and Ridgewick Chess stepped up in their high fashion chess looks and branded club shirts, putting on a stellar performance for overall scores of 13 and 14 total wins respectively. The Renegades, a misfit team filling in for a Queens based club took 15.5 points home for sixth.Scenes from a tense chess match at Bushwicks own BrookLAN (Mateusz Marianski)
The remaining five teams fought a gladiators fight, all vying for the coveted Championship Crown, along with handmade chess sets made by Azania Marachi among other prizes. The staples just outside of the borders of Brooklyn, like Manhattans Chess Meet, fought valiantly for their place in fifth, with an overall score of 28, just 1.5 points behind the Queens-based Astoria Chess.
With almost six hours and seven rounds left, three teams were left at the top; North Brooklyn Chess at third with 36 points and Bushwick Chess and Prospect Park Chess Club, both tied with 44 points each, after Bushwick Chess struck back against Prospects early lead with a 6-2 performance in a head to head round robin that gave them a chance to clutch the crown in tiebreaks.
Spectators and members of the other clubs soon surrounded the finals tables, as silence hit the room. After three early wins in the tie-breaking round, it looked as if Bushwick Chess were only two victories away from the top, only to narrowly miss a few chances. It would be the Prospect Park Chess Club that would land clearly at first, with a 5-3 score in yet further tiebreaks and taking home the new, coveted NYC Chess Club Olympiad Crown, along with their spoils.
There has never been a better time in New York to join your local chess club, with so many to choose from and each with their own dynamic personality. Catch me at Bushwick Chess every Tuesday 7pm at Nook Cafe, and consider leaping to new clubs elsewhere almost every day of the week.
