Elon Musk says the new large language model from his artificial intelligence lab xAI will be available to a select group from tomorrow. In a cryptic post on X, he claimed that in some respects it is "the best [model] that currently exists".
The worlds richest man launched xAI in July, bringing together a team of leading engineers and AI scientists to "understand the true nature of the universe" through AI. This came off the back of the growing success of OpenAI through its chatbot ChatGPT.
Musk was an early investor in OpenAI but left the board in 2018 after an apparent disagreement and a failed attempt to take over the company. He was also heavily investing in machine learning and AI through the self-driving vehicle division of Tesla at the time.
The billionaire has been critical of many AI products, services and research efforts from big tech companies, claiming too much emphasis is placed on guardrails and controls. Earlier this year he said he wanted to launch a "maximum truth-seeking AI".
In contrast to these lofty ambitions, Musk has also warned that AI poses an existential threat to humanity and that in the future it will put an end to work and create a world where "no job is needed". It isnt clear how much of that comes from his xAI research or is just opinion.
As well as Musk himself, xAI includes engineers who have previously worked for Google's DeepMind, Microsoft, OpenAI and Tesla. They have collectively worked on some of the most important technologies that power modern AI tools like ChatGPT and Bard.
The new xAI model is expected to be in direct competition with OpenAI's GPT-4, Google's PaLM 2 and Meta's Llama 2 with much of its training happening using Oracle's cloud network.
Musk has been in the U.K. this week at the AI Safety Summit. During a live conversation on X with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak he declared AI has the potential to become the most disruptive force in history.
He said: If you wish for a magic genie, that gives you any wish you want, and theres no limit. You dont have those three wish limits nonsense, its both good and bad. One of the challenges in the future will be how do we find meaning in life.
In some important respects, it is the best that currently exists.
During its initial announcement in July, Musk opined that for a "truth-seeking super-intelligence", it was safer to build it with curiosity and an interest in humanity as it will be more interested in keeping humanity safe.
That is part of what he hopes to achieve with xAI, a way to understand the universe and create a good AI. What format it will take, how it will be accessed by those given permission to use it or what the cost of the model will be have yet to be revealed.

I believe nothing in our foreseeable future will transform our lives more than artificial intelligence (AI). Like the coming of electricity or the birth of the internet, it will bring new knowledge, new opportunities for economic growth, new advances in human capability, and the chance to solve global problems we once thought beyond us.
AI can help solve world hunger by preventing crop failures and making it cheaper and easier to grow food. It can help accelerate the transition to net zero. And it is already making extraordinary breakthroughs in health and medicine, aiding us in the search for new dementia treatments and vaccines for cancer.
But like previous waves of technology, AI also brings new dangers and new fears. So, if we want our children and grandchildren to benefit from all the opportunities of AI, we must act and act now to give people peace of mind about the risks.
What are those risks? For the first time, the British government has taken the highly unusual step of publishing our analysis, including an assessment by the UK intelligence community. As prime minister, I felt this was an important contribution the UK could make, to help the world have a more informed and open conversation.

Our reports provide a stark warning. AI could be used for harm by criminals or terrorist groups. The risk of cyberattacks, disinformation, or fraud, pose a real threat to society. And in the most unlikely but extreme cases, some experts think there is even the risk that humanity could lose control of AI completely, through the kind of AI sometimes referred to as super intelligence.
We should not be alarmist about this. There is a very real debate happening, and some experts think it will never happen.
But even if the very worst risks are unlikely to happen, they would be incredibly serious if they do. So, leaders around the world, no matter our differences on other issues, have a responsibility to recognize those risks, come together, and act. Not least because many of the loudest warnings about AI have come from the people building this technology themselves. And because the pace of change in AI is simply breath-taking: Every new wave will become more advanced, better trained, with better chips, and more computing power.
So, what should we do?
First, governments do have a role. The UK has just announced the first ever AI Safety Institute. Our institute will bring together some of the most respected and knowledgeable people in the world. They will carefully examine, evaluate, and test new types of AI so that we understand what they can do. And we will share those conclusions with other countries and companies to help keep AI safe for everyone.
But AI does not respect borders. No country can make AI safe on its own.
So, our second step must be to increase international cooperation. That starts this week at the first ever Global AI Safety Summit, which Im proud the UK is hosting. And I am very much looking forward to hearing the important contribution of Mr. Nezar Patria, Indonesian Deputy Minister of Communications and Information.
What do we want to achieve at this weeks summit? I want us to agree the first ever international statement about the risks from AI. Because right now, we dont have a shared understanding of the risks we face. And without that, we cannot work together to address them.
Im also proposing that we establish a truly global expert panel, nominated by those attending the summit, to publish a state of AI science report. And over the longer term, my vision is for a truly international approach to safety, where we collaborate with partners to ensure AI systems are safe before they are released.
None of that will be easy to achieve. But leaders have a responsibility to do the right thing. To be honest about the risks. And to take the right long-term decisions to earn peoples trust, giving peace of mind that we will keep you safe. If we can do that, if we can get this right, then the opportunities of AI are extraordinary.
And we can look to the future with optimism and hope.

Researchers use Artificial Intelligence to identify potential vaccine for STD that infects 700k Americans each – Daily Mail

Artificial intelligence (AI) could pave the way for a vaccine against gonorrhea, researchers say.
The sexually transmitted disease is raising concerns among doctors because it is resistant to nearly all antibiotics, with experts fearing that if a super-strain gains a foothold in the US they may be left unable to treat it.
But researchers from Massachusettsand Denmark say they have used AI harnessing technology similar to facial recognition to detect two antigens on gonorrhea that could be used to develop a vaccine to protect against the STD.
'That really was a surprise,' said author Sanjay Ram, an infectious diseases expert at UMass Memorial Medical Center.
'Nobody would have predicted that these two proteins that were believed not to be surface exposed would work in vaccines.'
Dozens of billboards urging Americans to get tested for gonorrhea have popped up hovering over freeways in 19 cities across the United States.
In the study, published Tuesday in the journal mBio, scientists fed AI data on proteins from gonorrhea.
The AI, called Efficacy Discriminative Educated Network (EDEN),uses a feature similar to face recognition technology to understand the difference between proteins, saidAndreas Holm Mattson, the founder of AI immunology startup Evaxian.
The technology analyzed different combinations of proteins from the surface of gonorrhea to suggest the best formula for a vaccine.
Scientists then immunized mice with one of 11 combinations of two to three antigens recommended by the AI.
The mice were given three doses with three weeks between each dose.
Two to three weeks after the final dose, blood was then collected from the mice and exposed to the bacteria.
Scientists measured the immune response and found that mice immunized with the proteinsFtsN and NGO0265 had the strongest immune response.
FtsN is involved in the division of gonorrhea cells. Scientists are not certain of the role of NGO0265, but say it is also displayed on the cell surface of gonorrhea.
The researchers then combined the two proteins into a chimeric protein - a protein created through the joining of two genes - which induced a similar immune response.
The scientists said they were now considering a Phase 1 clinical trial of their vaccine to ensure it is safe to use in humans. Any vaccine based on this research is years away, they said.
About 700,000 Americans get gonorrhea every year, statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggest.
Gonorrhea infections reached record levels in the 1970s and 1980s with around 400 cases per 100,000 people at its peak.
But with the advent of technologies such as condoms, increased awareness of STDs and infection control programs, annual infections had plummeted by 74 percent since 1996.
Over the last few years, however, infections have started to rise again with factors like having more sexual partners, using condoms less often, a lack of testing and the emergence of antibiotic resistance all fueling the rise.
People can only become infected with gonorrhea via vaginal, anal, or oral sex when the bacteria is passed in bodily fluids from an infected person.
Early warning signs of infection include experiencing pain while urinating, having an abnormal discharge from the penis or anus and a redness or swelling in the urethra or vagina.
Infections are treated with a round of antibiotics. But in recent years, with the emergence of antibiotic resistance, doctors are beginning to warn that an alternative is needed.
If left untreated, long-term gonorrhea infections can raise the risk of complications during pregnancy like low birthweight and raise the risk of contracting other STIs like HIVby making it easier for the virus to enter the bloodstream.
In some cases, infections can lead to infertility in men by forming scar tissue in the urethra which can reduce how many sperm exit the body during ejaculation.
In women, the bacteria can move through the cervix into the upper reproductive organs leading to inflammation and scarring, which can affect fertility.
Earlier this year in Boston, two people were diagnosed with a 'concerning' strain of super gonorrhea.
There was no connection between the pair, suggesting the super strain is circulating more widely in the community.
Dr Margaret Cooke, head of Massachusetts' health department, said the discovery was a 'serious public health concern.'
In addition to Boston, the strain was previously diagnosed in the UK and Austria.

As we stand on the brink of the Fifth Industrial Revolution, artificial intelligence (AI,) robotics, the internet of things, biotechnology, and renewable energy will fuse, amidst a palpable fear that machines will replace us, rendering many current jobs obsolete. However, history has shown that while technology makes certain positions redundant, it also creates new opportunities that are hard to imagine while entering a new age. In the 5thIR there is a focus on human-centrictricity, as well as increased resilience and a much-needed emphasis on sustainability.
The advent of AI need not be a scene from The Terminator (1984.) Instead, its a transformative force thats poised to revolutionise how we work and interact with technology. The World Economic Forum predicts that while 75 million jobs may be displaced by AI technologies over the next few years, these same technologies are expected to create 133 million new roles, resulting in a net gain of 58 million jobs.
One area where AI is making significant strides is in the realm of cybersecurity. Cybercrime is a growing concern, with nearly 1 billion emails exposed in a single year, affecting 1 in 5 internet users. In the first half of 2022 alone, there were around 236.1 million ransomware attacks globally. AI can help secure our identities, businesses, and families from such threats. It can analyse vast amounts of data quickly and accurately, identifying potential threats and mitigating them before they cause harm.
The dark side of AI gets a lot more press than the good side. During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a deepfake video of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was circulated, falsely announcing that the war was over. This deepfake, along with hacked media services, spread counterfactual messages from a trustworthy source. Similar deepfake videos of Russian President Vladimir Putin surrendering also emerged during the war. Two public case studies involving deepfakes that targeted CEOs resulted in estimated losses amounting to US$243,000 and US$35 million respectively. A video by two artists used deepfake technology to make Mark Zuckerberg confess that his company really owns the future.
On the bright side is those who use AI for good. AI in cybersecurity is like a super-smart guard dog that not only barks when it sees an intruder but also learns and adapts to new threats. AI can be trained to recognise patterns of normal behavior in a computer system. When something unusual happens, like a sudden download of large amounts of data or access from a strange location, the AI raises an alarm. Its like the guard dog barking when it sees someone it doesnt recognise. AI can scan millions of lines of code in seconds to find weak spots that hackers could exploit, much faster than any human could. Its as if the guard dog could sniff out every possible entrance a burglar might use. Once a threat is detected, AI can respond instantly to stop the attack, such as by disconnecting a compromised device from the network. Its like the guard dog not just barking, but also chasing away the intruder. And finally, AI learns from every attack and becomes better at predicting and preventing future attacks. Its as if all the the guard dogs in the world had a shared memory and could remember every burglar it ever saw and recognise them if they come back.
However, as with any powerful tool, like guns and even cars, AI needs to be used responsibly. It is important to note that no country has yet passed legislation governing ethical and responsible AI. It will take time to see if firms will self-regulate or if governments will step in to regulate legally. Furthermore, there is no legal or regulatory activity relating to the malicious use of AI. Therefore, its crucial to use AI within ethical frameworks to prevent misuse. Just as a gardener cant predict whether a seed will grow into a beautiful flower or a weed, we cant foresee how every individual will use AI. But with careful nurturing and guidance, we can encourage the growth of beneficial AI applications.
The fear of job loss due to AI is similar to the fear store owners might have had when cloud computing was introduced. Those who embraced the change are now reaping the benefits and the unprecedented opportunities, while those who resisted it are lagging behind their competitors. The key is not to resist AI but to adapt to it, and to use it responsibly. Jobs will change; some may even disappear, but it will also create many new ones. This trend is nothing new. Before the invention of modern refrigeration, Ice Cutters would saw up the ice on frozen lakes into large blocks and then store them in ice houses. This ice was then used in the warmer months to preserve food and keep it cool. It was a crucial job for survival, especially in warmer climates. One space we can expect a lot of movement with job creation is in the green space. Renewable energy creates more jobs compared to investing the same amount of money in fossil fuels. For instance, investing in solar photovoltaic energy creates an average of 1.5 times as many jobs as investing the same amount of money in fossil fuels. Similarly, ecosystem restoration creates 3.7 times as many jobs as oil and gas production per dollar, and building efficiency retrofits create 2.8 times as many jobs as fossil fuels per dollar. These new jobs will free us from mundane tasks and allow us to focus on purpose-driven work. The key is relevance, as humans what we do either makes us relevant, or not. We are not relevant still cutting ice, but we are very relevant when it comes to ensuring sustainability of our planet.

By 2030, the most extreme impacts are confined to a subset of sectors, but this still triggers a public backlash, starting with those whose work is disrupted, and spilling over into a fierce public debate about the future of education and work, the papers postulate in an imagined future scenario.
It sounds like something out of science fiction highly skilled computers rendering humans obsolete. But dont draft your pre-emptive resignation letter just yet.
In a speech discussing the findings of the report, prime minister Rishi Sunak said it was too simple to say artificial intelligence would take peoples jobs. He asked the public to view the tech as a co-pilot instead.

This is, in theory, true. AI can complete mundane administrative tasks extremely quickly, freeing workers up to do other things.
One company I have spoken to adopted an AI system to schedule visits for social care, Hayton says. The employees could do something that previously took them three days in three hours.
But what such productivity-enhancing measures mean for employees isnt pre-determined.
[That company] could have made 90% of its employees redundant, Hayton added. Instead, it moved them into more interesting roles in business and customer development. But thats a choice that management made.
When a company sees its employees as a resource, AI will benefit workers. But if it sees them merely as an outgoing cost, it could lead to mass redundancy.
In slightly better news, government reports suggest that we may return to pre-1980 trends in which worker displacement from automation was roughly offset by creation of new jobs.
But where will these new jobs go? If we arent careful, low-to-mid skilled workers away from technological hubs could be cut out of the AI transition, Hayton says.
Theres huge demand for the few people with the skills to take on these complex, high-tech jobs, he explains. But in regions where theres below-average investment in workforce education and technology infrastructure, people wont get these jobs without massive investment.

The technology has the capacity to polarise the workforce, and to make it more unequal, Hayton added.
To offset that possibility, the government and companies that are adopting generative AI need to take employee rights seriously.
In this country, the unions have been eroded post-Thatcher. But in the AI transition, employee voices must be considered, he says. That way we are more likely to see positive outcomes.

EdSurge: Why did you decide to take the ISTE U AI course? What were your goals?
McClelland: One of the things that piqued my interest in the ISTE U course was that I didn't know much about using AI. I knew of ChatGPT from reading articles online, but I didn't know how it worked. I was just worried that my students would use this to write all their essays! And at first, our school blocked its use. I think all educators grew concerned.
I was at a crossroads; I didn't want students to use it because I didn't want academic dishonesty, but I also knew this technology would not go away. I thought it was really important to take the course because if I don't learn how to use it effectively and I don't learn what it is, then I won't be able to convey that to students. I'm doing them a disservice if I dont learn about AI.
What elements of the course structure and content were particularly effective in facilitating your learning about AI?
The instructor was really supportive. The course seemed more focused on my outcomes on my learning and applying the material rather than meeting a deadline. I loved that the course was asynchronous and self-paced. As much as I love being a part of live PDs and collaborating with other educators across the country, it's really hard to do that weekly.
In the ISTE U course, we could regularly chat with classmates through posts and replies. I could still connect with educators but without having to be on a , especially considering different time zones and start dates for school. My school started in early July, so I finished the course during the first few weeks of my school year. I appreciated having the flexibility to say, I'm super swamped this first week back at school and dont have time in the evenings; I'm just going to sit down and do this on Sunday when I'm doing my lesson planning.
I really loved that every module opened with a fun way that AI can be used it's not just ChatGPT writing an essay or MagicSchool AI making your lesson plan. One of my favorite activities was giving prompts to different generative art AI bots, resulting in completely different designs. Even the AI tools that are trained using the same information could still give unique results! This later became a great discussion point with my students.
Another great example from the course was a whole lesson on deepfakes, which involve creating audio or video of situations that never actually happened. Being a government teacher and teaching about political elections, I'm really excited to apply what Ive learned in my classroom. This will help me educate students on spotting deepfakes and discussing the possible implications.
The crux of what I got from the course, which has helped me a lot in approaching AI and how to use it in the classroom, is that there are so many things to learn. As educators, we often think that its bad for students to use ChatGPT and that it's going to lead to them not learning anything. But we can't knock students for not knowing how to use it properly if we don't know how to use it properly ourselves; we need to teach them in what context to use AI and how to do it in an academically honest way.
Can you share specific examples of how you integrated AI concepts or tools into your teaching practices as a result of taking this course?
I work in a school with an emerging multilingual population, and AI has been so beneficial in helping me scaffold resources to make them more accessible for my students. Especially in a social studies classroom where Im working with a lot of primary sources, sometimes it's hard to figure out how to break down that language so that English learners are still accessing the same content but not losing the academic vocabulary.
In government class the other day, we used AI to gather background information on past political parties. Once students understood the basic points, we then discussed how those parties may have merged into modern political parties.
I have also held class discussions about how AI works and how it is trained with information from the internet. This leads to conversations around what problems could arise. I ask students, Could AI be trained on bad information? What can we do about that? We discuss how we cant blindly trust AI; rather, we can use it as a baseline to build knowledge. I think of it as levels of taxonomy: AI can give us a basic understanding, but then students need to analyze and create from there.
What advice can you offer other educators looking to learn more about integrating AI in their classrooms?
Dont be afraid of AI. It seems like there exists this fear that AI will replace teachers. AI can teach kids content, but it doesnt teach them how to apply it. Thats our job as teachers. Our role is changing a bit, but for the better. Now, we dont necessarily need to spend as much time teaching the baseline information. Instead, we can do more projects, engage in more class discussions, and help students apply that information.
I encourage teachers to find their online communities. I follow several edtech accounts that offer ideas on using AI in the classroom, and I adjust the ideas to my different classes. This doesnt mean redoing everything in your lessons. Try revising a couple of lessons for each unit by integrating AI tools. You dont have to totally change what you are doing to expose students to AI.
AI is going to become a more integral part of the workforce. If we as educators are trying to prepare students for the world of college and careers, we must train them to use AI tools responsibly.
