Apple Intelligence Revealed at WWDC 2024 as Company Jumps Into AI Race – The New York Times

Nearly two years after OpenAI ignited a race to add generative artificial intelligence into products, Apple jumped into the competition on Monday, as it revealed plans to bring the technology to more than a billion iPhone users around the world.

During a two-hour presentation from its futuristic Silicon Valley campus, Apple said that it would be using generative A.I. to power what it is calling Apple Intelligence. The system will prioritize messages and notifications and will offer writing tools that are capable of proofreading and suggesting what users have written in emails, notes or text. It also will result in a major upgrade for Siri, Apples virtual assistant.

Apples plans to offer A.I. in its iPhones represents the next step in bringing artificial intelligence into the consumer mainstream. Apple, the marquee name of Silicon Valley, could do more than any other company to add credibility to a technology that has more than a few critics, who worry that it is mistake-prone and could add to the flood of misinformation already on the internet.

Apples new A.I. features could also help calm concerns that the iPhone maker had slipped behind its biggest rivals in the tech industrys embrace of artificial intelligence. The value of other tech companies, like Microsoft and Nvidia, has ballooned because of their aggressive A.I. plans. Earlier this year, Microsoft dethroned Apple as the most valuable technology company in the world.

While introducing its new A.I., Apple emphasized how it planned to integrate the technology into its products with privacy in mind. The company said that the technology, which can answer questions, create images and write software code, would perform sensitive tasks. It showed how the system would be able to automatically determine if a rescheduled meeting time would complicate plans to attend a childs theater performance.

It said that the computer processing would be done on an iPhone rather than in data centers, where personal information has a greater risk of being compromised. For complex requests that require more computing power, it has created a cloud network with Apple semiconductors that, it said, is more private because its not stored or accessible, even by Apple.

Apple’s AI Push Puts Privacy, Security in the Spotlight – PYMNTS.com

As Apple enters the race to bring advanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to consumer devices and services, the tech giant is betting that a strong emphasis on privacy and security will set its offerings apart in an increasingly competitive market.

This can increase business trust, encouraging the adoption of AI-driven analytics and data processing solutions within a more secure framework.

However, Schrade cautioned that while Apples approach is a positive development, its only a first step. Trusted hardware-based confidential computing has been around for quite some time and is a field that, due to the complexity of ensuring actual hardware-based security, has in itself seen a lot of exploits, vulnerabilities, and data breaches,he noted. Those systems still require trust in third parties, which, in the ideal case, would not be required from users.

Some cybersecurity experts also warn that the effectiveness of Apples privacy and security measures will depend on proper implementation and user education.

In the past, Macs have relied on 0365 to store sensitive data, but there was a lack of awareness around them, and users could easily make these buckets public, leaking information,Jason Lamar, senior vice president of product at the cybersecurity firm Cobalt.io, told PYMNTS.

Similarly, Apples new Private Cloud Computemay have the same emphasis on privacy and security. Still, there will need to be a lot of training around it both internally and for Apple users to ensure the information cant be accessed by bad actors.

Lamar also noted that Apples use of custom silicon in its Private Cloud Compute servers, while potentially enhancing efficiency and control, may present challenges for security verification.

It gives Apple tight control over the end-to-end processing and customer experience,he said. It may make it harder for security leaders to verify and trust that security is being performed at all layers depending upon what kind of transparency Apple will provide for the many layers involved.

Apple has long led Big Tech in its stance on user privacy, so other companies will have a harder time following up on the momentum from these product announcements, Gal Ringel, co-founder and CEO at data privacy platform Mine, told PYMNTS.

Apple going all-in on AI, despite the past year of privacy turbulence in the sphere, is indicative of how much the technology will be used to fuel innovation in the coming years, he added.

Ringel sees Apples move as potentially encouraging for companies that have been hesitant to fully embrace AI amidst recent privacy concerns. Apple is paving the way for companies to balance data privacy and innovation, and the positive reception of this news, as opposed to other AI product releases, demonstrates that building up the value of privacy is a strategy that pays off in todays world,he said.

However, Lamar warned that data leaks could undermine trust in AI technologies. Should data leaks begin to show, they could have the opposite effect and cause distrust among organizations and AI,he said.

Another key aspect of Apples AI strategy is its partnership with OpenAI to integrate the ChatGPT chatbot into its Siri digital assistant. While the move has generated excitement, it has also raised concerns about the security implications of the widely used AI tool.

OpenAIs ChatGPT is used by bad actors and everyday employees on all levels,Lamar cautioned. Even the most inexperienced cyberattackers can use OpenAI to mimic human language, make more advanced phishing emails, create fake sites, and organize disinformation campaigns.

The ubiquity of ChatGPT across various platforms and companies has also raised questions about its overall safety and security. The technology can cause uneasiness, and this year, the number of security vulnerabilities increased by 21%, putting organizations at greater risk than ever before,Lamar noted.

To mitigate the security risks posed by ChatGPT and other AI technologies, experts emphasize the importance of robust cybersecurity training for employees and proactive measures by IT departments. Its also more important than ever for IT departments to ensure that their security postures are up to date and they are taking proactive and not reactive actions, Lamar said.

As Apple and other tech giants vie for dominance in the rapidly evolving AI market, the companys focus on privacy and security could set a new standard for the industry. However, the ultimate success of its approach will depend on effective implementation, transparency, and user education to ensure that the benefits of AI can be harnessed while mitigating the risks posed by increasingly sophisticated threats and the widespread adoption of powerful AI tools like ChatGPT.

Mobile devices, especially phones, are continuing to grow in capability, even surpassing traditional computers, as evidenced by this Apple announcement,Krishna Vishnubhotla, vice president of product strategy at mobile security firm Zimperium, told PYMNTS.

As businesses evaluate the security aspects of AI more closely, Ringel suggested that Apples commitment to data protection could potentially slow down broad AI adoption. Apple Intelligence: Tech giant unveils new AI iPhone, iPad and iMac features amid OpenAI deal – Euronews

Apple has jumped into the AI race and will bring the technology to its latest devices, including ChatGPT into its Siri assistant.

Apple presented new features on Monday in a bid to join the artificial intelligence (AI) race that will see it bring "Apple Intelligence" to iPad, iPhone and Macs.

"Were thrilled to introduce a new chapter in Apple innovation. Apple Intelligence will transform what users can do with our products - and what our products can do for our users," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement.

He said the AI can be accessed in "a completely private and secure way".

The announcement came at the company's World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) as Apple works to catch up to companies such as Microsoft and Google that have become early AI leaders.

Apple is leaning on OpenAI's ChatGPT to make its virtual assistant Siri smarter and more helpful.

Siri's optional gateway to ChatGPT will be free to all iPhone users and made available on other Apple products once the option is baked into the next generation of Apple's operating systems.

ChatGPT subscribers are supposed to be able to easily sync their existing accounts when using the iPhone, and should get more advanced features than free users would.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman sat in the front row of the packed conference, which was attended by developers from more than 60 countries.

"Together with Apple, were making it easier for people to benefit from what AI can offer," Altman said in a statement.

Beyond allowing Siri to tap into ChatGPT's storehouse of knowledge, Apple is giving its 13-year-old virtual assistant an extensive makeover designed to make it more personable and versatile, even as it currently fields about 1.5 billion queries a day.

It will be able to handle more tasks according to Monday's presentation.

The new features will only work on recent models of Apple products as the devices need advanced processors.

Apple also announced that it will be roll out a technology called Rich Communications Service, or RCS, to its iMessage app.

It should improve the security of texting between iPhones and Android devices but will not change the blue bubbles showing text messages from other iPhones and green bubbles from Android devices.

In another upcoming twist to the iPhone's messaging app, users will be able to write a text (or have an AI tool compose it) in advance and schedule a specific time to automatically send it.

One of the most mind-numbing and tedious jobs around today, data entry will surely be one of the first roles supplanted by AI. Instead of a human laboring over endless data sets and fiddly forms for hours on end, AI systems will be able to input and manage large amounts of data quickly and seamlessly, hopefully freeing up human workers for much more productive tasks.

You might already have endured robotic calls asking if you have been the victim of an accident that wasnt your fault, or whether youre keen to upgrade your long-distance calling plan but this could be just a taste of things to come. The legal industry is another one that is dominated by large amounts of data and paperwork, and also one that is dominated by role-specific processes and even language. This makes it another prime candidate for AI, which will be able to automate the lengthy data analysis and entry actions undertaken by paralegals and legal assistants today although given the scale or importance of the case involved, it may still be wise to have some kind of human element

Signing in for an appointment or a meeting is another job that many believe can easily be done by AI platforms. Rather than needing to bother or distract a human from their job, simply check in on a display screen, with your visitors badge or meeting confirmation registered in seconds allowing you (and everyone else) to get on with your day.

Similar to AI drivers, autonomous vehicles and robots powered by AI systems could soon be taking the role of delivery people. After scanning the list of destinations for any given day, the vehicle or platform would be able to quickly calculate the most efficient route, ensuring no waiting around all day for your package, as well as being able to instantly flag any issues or missed deliveries.

In a boost to current spell checking tools, it may be that AI systems eventually graduate from suggesting or writing content to helping check it for mistakes. Another area which relies on quickly spotting trends and patterns among huge tranches of data, the statistics field could be quickly swamped by AI platforms. Whether it is at a business level, where companies could look to spot potential growth opportunities or risky situations, all the way down to the sports stats used by commentators and fans alike, AI can quickly come up with the figures needed.

A job that has already declined in importance over the past few years thanks to the emergence and widespread adoption of centralized collaboration tools, the role of project manager is another sure-fire target for AI. Rather than having a designated manager trying to keep tabs on the work being done by a number of disparate teams, an AI-powered central solution could collate all the progress in a single location, allowing everyone to view the latest updates and stay on top of their work.

Were already seeing the beginning of AI taking over the image design and generation space, with animation set to be one of the first fields to feel the effect. Many of us are perfectly comfortable booking and scheduling our vacations independently, but sometimes you want all of the stress of planning taken off your hands. Rather than leaving it to a human agent, AI travel service platforms could gather all of your requirements and come up with a tailored solution or itinerary exactly sculpted to your needs, without endless back and forth, taking all of the hassle out of your vacation planning.

Making assessments on the viability of insurance applications can be a lengthy process, with agents needing to take into consideration a huge number of potential risks and other criteria, often via specific formulae or structures. Rather than a human needing to spend all this time, AI agents could quickly scan through all the information provided, coming up with a decision much faster and more effectively.

Stress testers will be able to evaluate the status of your tech stack and network to make sure that any AI tools your business is set to use dont have the opposite effect and push everything to breaking point.

With content creation becoming an increasingly important role for AI, were likely to see such images, audio and video appearing more frequently in everyday life. But were already seeing backlash against obviously AI-generated content littered with errors, like extra fingers on humans, or nonsense alphabets in advertising. Having a human editor that is able to audit this content and ensure it is accurate, and fit for human consumption, could be a vital new role.

In a similar vein, AI-generated content may also need a human sense-checking it before it hits the public domain. Similar to the work currently being done by proofreaders and editors on human-produced content around the world, making sure that AI documents flow properly and sound legitimate will be another crucial consideration, and should lead to a growth in these sorts of roles.

Finally, despite the efficiency and effectiveness of AI-generated content, there will still always be room for the human touch. Much like we already have authentic artists, or artisans who specialize in handmade goods, it may soon be that we have creators and painters who strive for their work to be authentically human, setting them apart from the AI hordes.

Nvidia, which makes microchips that power most artificial intelligence applications, began an extraordinary run a year ago.

Fueled by an explosion of interest in A.I., the Silicon Valley company said last May that it expected its chip sales to go through the roof. They did and the fervor didnt stop, with Nvidia raising its revenue projections every few months. Its stock soared, driving the company to a more than $2 trillion market capitalization that makes it more valuable than Alphabet, the parent of Google.

On Wednesday, Nvidia again reported soaring revenue and profits that underscored how it remains a dominant winner of the A.I. boom, even as it grapples with outsize expectations and rising competition.

Revenue was $26 billion for the three months that ended in April, surpassing its $24 billion estimate in February and tripling sales from a year earlier for the third consecutive quarter. Net income surged sevenfold to $5.98 billion.

Nvidia also projected revenue of $28 billion for the current quarter, which ends in July, more than double the amount from a year ago and higher than Wall Street estimates.

We are fundamentally changing how computing works and what computers can do, Jensen Huang, Nvidias chief executive, said in a conference call with analysts. The next industrial revolution has begun.

Fritz Lang First Depicted Artificial Intelligence on Film in Metropolis (1927), and It Frightened People Even Then – Open Culture

Artificial intelligence seems to have become, as Michael Lewis labeled a previous chapter in the recent history of technology, the new new thing. But human anxieties about it are, if not an old old thing, then at least part of a tradition longer than we may expect. For vivid evidence, look no further than Fritz LangsMetropolis, which brought the very first cinematic depiction of artificial intelligence to theaters in 1927. It imagines a future cleaved in two, where the affluent from lofty skyscrapers rule over a subterranean caste of laborers, writes Synapse Analytics Omar Abo Mosallam. The class tension is so palpable that the invention of a Maschinenmensch (a robot capable of work) upends the social order.

The sheer tirelessness of the Maschinenmensch sows havoc in the city; later, after it takes on the form of a young woman called Maria a transformation you can watch in the clip above it incites workers to rise up and destroy the machines that keep the city functioning. Here, there is a suggestion to associate this new invention with an unraveling of the social order. This robot, whichGuardianfilm critic Peter Bradshaw describes as a brilliant eroticization and fetishization of modern technology, has long beenMetropolis signature figure, more iconic than HAL, Data, and WALLE put together.

Still, those characters all rate mentions of their own in the articles reviewing the history of AI in the movies recently published by the BFI, RT, Pictory, and other outlets besides. The Day the Earth Stood Still, Alien, Blade Runner (and even more so its sequel Blade Runner 2049), Ghost in the Shell, The Matrix, and Ex Machina. Not all of these pictures present their artificially intelligent characters primarily as existential threats to the existing order; the BFIs Georgina Guthrie highlights video essayist-turned-auteur Kogonadas After Yang as an example that treats the role of AI could assume in society as a much more complex indeed, much more human matter.

FromMetropolis toAfter Yang, as RTs Alan Smeaton points out, AI is usually portrayed in movies in a robotic or humanoid-like fashion, presumably because we can easily relate to humanoid and robotic forms. But as the public has come to understand over the past few years, we can perceive a technology as potentially or actually intelligent even it doesnt resemble a human being. Perhaps the age of the fearsome mechanical Art Deco gynoid will never come to pass, but we now feel more keenly than ever both the seductiveness and the threat of Metropolis Maschinenmensch or, as it was named in the original on which the film was based, Futura.

A co-leader of a campus artificial intelligence research team with a self-described genuine zeal for teaching has been selected to serve as Elon Universitys first director of artificial intelligence integration.

Assistant Professor Mustafa Akben begins his new administrative role on July 1, 2024, following a competitive internal search.

Akben will lead the integration of artificial intelligence across Elons academic and administrative departments, building on six core principles the university helped establish last year to guide higher education institutions with a rapidly evolving and groundbreaking technology.

Dr. Akbens commitment to ethical AI practices and his proven ability to translate complex AI concepts into transformative educational experiences make him uniquely qualified to advance our strategic goals in Boldly Elon, said Elon University President Connie Ledoux Book. His leadership will mark a significant step in Elons commitment to serving as a global model for integrating AI into post-secondary education.

Akbens responsibilities as director of artificial intelligence integration include collaborating with faculty and staff members on:

Akben brings a wealth of expertise in deep learning, generative AI, and the ethical application of artificial intelligence. His primary research in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business has focused on how AI can transform human cognition and workplace behaviors. Akbens professional journey includes significant achievements such as twice winning the SIOP Machine Learning and AI Competition and publishing influential research on the role of AI in management and organizational behavior.

In coordination with colleagues over the past year, he also has helped organize multiple AI literacy workshops, conduct university-wide research, draft a white paper, and provide strategic insights to university leadership.

The depth of Dr. Akbens knowledge about artificial intelligence and the ways in which it influences our present as well as its capacity to affect our future is matched only by his enthusiasm for student learning, said Rebecca Kohn, Elon Universitys provost and vice president of academic affairs. The race to put artificial intelligence everywhere is taking a detour through the good old laptop computer.

Microsoft on Monday introduced a new kind of computer designed for artificial intelligence. The machines, Microsoft says, will run A.I. systems on chips and other gear inside the computers so they are faster, more personal and more private.

The new computers, called Copilot+ PC, will allow people to use A.I. to make it easier to find documents and files they have worked on, emails they have read, or websites they have browsed. Their A.I. systems will also automate tasks like photo editing and language translation.

The new design will be included in Microsofts Surface laptops and high-end products that run on the Windows operating system offered by Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Samsung, some of the largest PC makers in the world.

The A.I. PC, industry analysts believe, could reverse a longtime decline in the importance of the personal computer. For the last two decades, the demand for the fastest laptops has diminished because so much software was moved into cloud computing centers. A strong internet connection and web browser was all most people needed.
