RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) Governor Glenn Youngkin has signed an executive order relating to artificial intelligence (AI) in Virginia.

The executive order was signed on Jan. 18, implementing guidelines for AI in education as well as AI policies and information technology standards that protect the states databases and the individual data of all Virginians.

According to Youngkins office, the order integrates the safeguarding of Virginia residents and businesses but also brings awareness to opportunities that come with AI innovation.

These standards and guidelines will help provide the necessary guardrails to ensure that AI technology will be safely implemented across all state agencies and departments,Youngkin said.At the same time, we must utilize these innovative technologies to deliver state services more efficiently and effectively. Therefore, my administration will utilize the $600,000 in proposed funds outlined in my Unleashing Opportunity budget to launch pilots that evaluate the effectiveness of these new standards.

According to the governors office, Virginia has the largest population of cybersecurity companies on the East Coast and is one of the first states in the country to issue AI standards.

Youngkin claims the standards of this executive order will set new technology requirements for the use of AI in government agencies, including law enforcement personnel, while the educational guidelines will establish principles for the use of AI in all education levels to ensure that students are prepared for jobs of the future.
